Fire guts Overland aircraft at airport
An aircraft of Overland Airways, one of Nigeria’s domestic carriers, yesterday went up in flames inside its hangar at the General Aviation Terminal of Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos.
The ATR aircraft with registration number 5N BPE according to investigation was being powered by the Ground Power Unit when it went up in flames.
Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) fire service arrived quickly to put out the fire before it engulfed the entire aircraft.
No life was lost in the incident as investigations have commenced to determine the cause of the fire, it was learnt.
The ATR is a twinengine turboprop, shorthaul airliner developed and produced in France and Italy. It costs about $25m to $26m per unit.
Spokesman of AIB, Mr. Tunji Oketunbi, said the cause of the incident would be made public in a few weeks.
