Fire guts Over­land air­craft at air­port

An air­craft of Over­land Air­ways, one of Nige­ria’s do­mes­tic car­ri­ers, yes­ter­day went up in flames in­side its han­gar at the Gen­eral Avi­a­tion Ter­mi­nal of Mur­tala Muhammed Air­port, La­gos.

The ATR air­craft with reg­is­tra­tion num­ber 5N BPE ac­cord­ing to in­ves­ti­ga­tion was be­ing pow­ered by the Ground Power Unit when it went up in flames.

Fed­eral Air­ports Author­ity of Nige­ria (FAAN) fire ser­vice ar­rived quickly to put out the fire be­fore it en­gulfed the en­tire air­craft.

No life was lost in the in­ci­dent as in­ves­ti­ga­tions have com­menced to de­ter­mine the cause of the fire, it was learnt.

The ATR is a twinengine tur­bo­prop, short­haul air­liner de­vel­oped and pro­duced in France and Italy. It costs about $25m to $26m per unit.

Spokesman of AIB, Mr. Tunji Oke­tunbi, said the cause of the in­ci­dent would be made pub­lic in a few weeks.
