Private firms take over maintenance of parks, gardens in Muscat governorate
Muscat Municipality has started privatising the maintenance of parks and landscaping areas in the governorate. The municipal- ity has nearly 145 parks and gardens and ten areas for landscaping that falls under its Department of Landscaping and Gardening.
The contracts awarded to private firms are for horticultural needs, civil work, security and maintenance of facilities including equipment in parks and gardens.
On how the municipality will benefit from this initiative, a source said, “This move will re- sult in savings. A lot of manpower is needed for the maintenance of parks and landscaping areas. With this new arrangement, we will just supervise the overall work.”
The source said that park lighting and garbage disposal are part of this arrangement. “The move was initiated after thorough examinations on every aspect.”
Rajib Tomar, head of Modern Irrigation Company that is responsible for the maintenance of Naseem Gardens, said, “The municipality had invited tender. We applied and got the contract. You can see the difference when you visit Naseem Gardens next time.”
K Raghu Prasad, head of Al Bait al Akhdar that got the contract for the maintenance of Qurm park said, “We have staff for the upkeep of the park. Municipality officials visit the park from time to time to ensure that everything is being done as per the contract.”
