Some students of Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) have developed a mobile application - Jalboot (a name of old ship) - to help users access any book available in the sultanate.

“This app will have database of all books available in the sultanate. It will help anyone to search information about a book, the place or the institution where they can get it from and its price. These books can be in any language. The app can even help the user in getting the book delivered at his doorstep. This first-of-itskind app can be downloaded by next month,” said Hiba al Hashmi, CEO of Avenir which has developed this application. Avenir is a student company participating in Sharikati 2017 competition and the app has been developed as part of the contest.

She said, “The app will help you get book-related items like a bookmark, notebook. Anyone who wants to sell used books can do it through the application too.

“People can get information about any book via the app or our website www.avenir.co.om which too will be launched soon. We are now in the process of updating our database of all books available in the country. It’s basically a library in your pocket. You cannot read the books in the app though. We thought of developing this app after we found it difficult to access many books recommended by our teachers.”
