Sem­i­nar on food high­lights eco­nomic im­pact on fam­i­lies

Salalah - A sem­i­nar on ‘ Food Con­sump­tion and Eco­nomic Im­pact on Fam­ily In­come’ was held at Dho­far Univer­sity un­der the pa­tron­age of H E Sheikh Salim bin Ou­fait al Shan­fari, head of Dho­far Mu­nic­i­pal­ity and head of the Or­gan­is­ing Com­mit­tee of Salalah Tourism Fes­ti­val. The two-day sem­i­nar, which came to an end on Wed­nes­day, was or­gan­ised by the Oman As­so­ci­a­tion for Con­sumer Pro­tec­tion as part of the ac­tiv­i­ties of Salalah Tourism Fes­ti­val.

The sem­i­nar’s pro­gramme in­cluded a work­ing pa­per ti­tled ‘Smart Shop­ping and its Ef­fect on the Con­sumer Healthily and Eco­nom­i­cally’, which was pre­sented by Dr Mariam bint Ab­dul­lah al Wa’eli, direc­tor of Sup­port Ser­vices for Spe­cialised Med­i­cal Care in the Min­istry of Health.

Dr Awadh Sha’aban, trainer, ex­pert and con­sul­tant of Food and Agri­cul­ture at the In­sti­tute of Food Re­search and Tech­nol­ogy in Egypt de­liv­ered a lec­ture on the ba­sic food com­po­nents and op­ti­mal food needs of the in­di­vid­ual.

The sem­i­nar also dis­cussed proper plan­ning of con­sump­tion of food and health, so­cial and eco­nomic haz­ards to in­crease con­sump­tion of food, ways to over­come the scarcity, and rise of some food com­modi­ties.

It in­volved some gov­ern­ment and pri­vate en­ti­ties – the Oman Cham­ber of Com­merce and In­dus­try Salalah Branch, Dho­far Univer­sity, gov­ern­ment and pri­vate col­leges and Omani Women’s as­so­ci­a­tions. The sem­i­nar tar­geted those con­cerned with the pro­tec­tion of con­sumers and those con­cerned with plan­ning and ra­tio­nal­i­sa­tion of con­sump­tion.
