Oman Air in top gear in Barcelona
Muscat – A rampant Oman Air displayed top form to climb to the top of rankings on the penultimate day of Act 4 of the Extreme Sailing Series in Barcelona, Spain, on Saturday.
After ten spectacular races, Oman Air, skippered by Phil Robertson, was leading with 164 points followed by Red Bull Sailing Team (158) and SAP Extreme Sailing Team (154).
On Saturday, the key to success was nailing the reaching starts and Oman Air came up with three wins, three seconds and three thirds to jump from Friday's third into pole position.
Robertson, who joined Oman Air at the start of 2017, said, “We kept it pretty simple but our starting was on point and that was the key with reaching starts - if you can get to mark one in good shape then you’re doing well.”
Robertson praised his crew of Pete Greenhalgh, Nasser al Mashari, Ed Smyth and James Wierzbowski for executing the perfect starts.
“We had our trigger pulls locked in and our speed on the reaches were really nice, so that gave us a good position to take the race from there.
“Tomorrow is another day though - we have to come in fresh and hope to find the same form we had today.”
In the Flying Phantom series French team Cup Legend jumped from third to first with two race wins that leave it tied on 133 points with Austrian rivals Red Bull Sailing Team.
Oman Sail is placed sixth with 105 but trails fourth-placed team, Lupe Tortilla by just one point.
