Oman­tel signs agree­ment with Mus­cat Univer­sity to be­come mem­ber of OMREN

Oman­tel, the lead­ing tele­com provider in Oman, has signed an agree­ment with Mus­cat Univer­sity to be a mem­ber of the Oman Re­search and Ed­u­ca­tion Net­work (OMREN) to pro­mote Elearn­ing and raise the level of ed­u­ca­tion among var­i­ous af­fil­i­ated in­sti­tu­tions in the sul­tanate.

Through this agree­ment, Oman­tel and Mus­cat Univer­sity look for­ward to en­hanc­ing ed­u­ca­tional ser­vices pro­vided in the midst of the rapid growth and de­vel­op­ment of telecom­mu­ni­ca­tion ser­vices and tech­nolo­gies. The in­for­ma­tion revo­lu­tion is be­ing wit­nessed in many sec­tors and do­mains, in­clud­ing the ed­u­ca­tion sec­tor, and this agree­ment will en­able Mus­cat Univer­sity stu­dents to ben­e­fit from the en­vi­ron­ment that OMREN pro­vides.

Todd Dick, vice pres­i­dent, En­ter­prise Unit at Oman­tel, and pro­fes­sor An­thony Ca­ha­lan, vice chan­cel­lor of Mus­cat Univer­sity, signed the agree­ment in the pres­ence of Dr Ab­dul­monem al Kharousi, di­rec­tor of OMREN.

With the ad­di­tion of this part­ner­ship with Mus­cat Univer­sity, mem­ber­ship of OMREN has in­creased to ten uni­ver­si­ties and col­leges. Dick said, “Oman­tel’s ob­jec­tive is to in­crease the num­ber of ed­u­ca­tional in­sti­tutes in the net­work, pro­mote E-learn­ing and lead to achiev­ing the aims of the na­tional strat­egy and the vi­sion for sci­en­tific re­search in the sul­tanate.”

Khalid al Balushi, se­nior ex­pert, Gov­ern­ment Projects, also con­firmed that Oman­tel and other rel­e­vant par­ties are striv­ing to achieve the ob­jec­tives of OMREN, which is to cre­ate a suit­able en­vi­ron­ment for re­searchers and stu­dents at uni­ver­si­ties and col­leges and there­fore en­hance the level of ed­u­ca­tion in the sul­tanate.

Oman­tel is con­stantly in­vest­ing in en­hanc­ing its telecom­mu­ni­ca­tions net­works, de­vel­op­ing smart tech­nolo­gies and in­no­va­tive so­lu­tions that sup­port high­speed com­mu­ni­ca­tion net­works and link ed­u­ca­tional and re­search in­sti­tu­tions to each other for easy ex­change of in­for­ma­tion.

Pro­fes­sor Ca­ha­lan said, “We are pleased to join OMREN and we be­lieve that the as­so­ci­a­tion will un­doubt­edly en­rich re­search at Mus­cat Univer­sity and en­cour­age a valu­able ex­change of knowl­edge with other in­stitu- tions af­fil­i­ated with the net­work. Mus­cat Univer­sity aims to de­liver high qual­ity, in­dus­try-en­gaged ed­u­ca­tion to Omani and international stu­dents, sup­ported by re­search that is rel­e­vant to the so­cial and eco­nomic pri­or­i­ties of Oman, in col­lab­o­ra­tion with re­searchers at our international part­ner uni­ver­si­ties, As­ton and Cran­field in the UK.”

Oman­tel works on a longterm vi­sion to ef­fec­tively con­trib­ute to the fu­ture of the sul­tanate by in­vest­ing in im­prov­ing the telecom­mu­ni­ca­tions sec­tor in all ar­eas of the sul­tanate while con­nect­ing them lo­cally and in­ter­na­tion­ally.
