Al Nahdha Hospital organises awareness event on neck, mouth and head tumours
Muscat - In conjunction with World Head & Neck Cancer Day, the Tumour Unit at Al Nahdha Hospital organised an awareness campaign on symptoms of neck, mouth and head tumours at Oman Avenues Mall on Tuesday.
The campaign, which was held under the patronage of H H Dr Tagreed bint Turki al Said, saw a number of specialised doctors and technicians, stated a press release.
The event aimed to raise public awareness about the symptoms of neck, mouth and head tumours, explaining their causes, the way to avoid, as well as training the public on self-examina- tion in order to able to detect these tumours earlier, so the patient can recover.
Dr Salma al Shaibania, senior oncology surgeon and head of ENT Department at Al Nahdha Hospital, pointed out that the most important symptoms are ulcers in the mouth, continuous nose bleeding especially among the elderly, tumours in the neck, and hoarseness lasting more than two weeks with difficulty in swallowing or breathing.
Dr Salma said that smoking cigarettes and other types of smoking are the main causes of these tumours. Besides, chewing tobacco and consuming alcohol also cause cancer, she said.
