Al Nahdha Hos­pi­tal or­gan­ises aware­ness event on neck, mouth and head tu­mours

Mus­cat - In con­junc­tion with World Head & Neck Can­cer Day, the Tu­mour Unit at Al Nahdha Hos­pi­tal or­gan­ised an aware­ness cam­paign on symp­toms of neck, mouth and head tu­mours at Oman Av­enues Mall on Tues­day.

The cam­paign, which was held un­der the pa­tron­age of H H Dr Ta­greed bint Turki al Said, saw a num­ber of spe­cialised doc­tors and tech­ni­cians, stated a press re­lease.

The event aimed to raise pub­lic aware­ness about the symp­toms of neck, mouth and head tu­mours, ex­plain­ing their causes, the way to avoid, as well as train­ing the pub­lic on self-ex­am­ina- tion in or­der to able to de­tect these tu­mours ear­lier, so the pa­tient can re­cover.

Dr Salma al Shaiba­nia, se­nior on­col­ogy sur­geon and head of ENT De­part­ment at Al Nahdha Hos­pi­tal, pointed out that the most im­por­tant symp­toms are ul­cers in the mouth, con­tin­u­ous nose bleed­ing espe­cially among the el­derly, tu­mours in the neck, and hoarse­ness last­ing more than two weeks with dif­fi­culty in swal­low­ing or breath­ing.

Dr Salma said that smok­ing cig­a­rettes and other types of smok­ing are the main causes of these tu­mours. Be­sides, chew­ing tobacco and con­sum­ing al­co­hol also cause can­cer, she said.
