HFS U14s to debut in Youdan Trophy in UK
Al Habsi Football School (HFS), which was launched in June last year, will make its debut in Youdan Trophy, a tournament known to offer the most competitive international academy football in England.
The third edition of Youdan Trophy for the U14s will be held in Sheffield, UK, from July 31 to August 4. Led by HFS technical director, Andy Watson, the 18-member U14 team left for London on Saturday.
HFS will take on Everton in its opener on July 31 and has been clubbed in a five-team Group D along with Celtic, Sheffield United and Supersport United.
After its opener on Monday, it takes on Celtic and Supersport on Tuesday before concluding its group engagement on Wednesday.
Ahead of the trip, Watson said, “This tournament will give the boys valuable experience while playing against some of the top clubs. It is our debut and we hope the boys return back with good memories.”
This edition features 20 teams including teams from top English Premier League clubs like Manchester United and Crystal Palace.
More than 800 players in U14 and U16 categories will compete in the event.
The Youdan Trophy is commemorating the oldest football tournament in the world – the Football Challenge Cup presented by Thomas Youdan Esq that pre-dates the FA Cup by a full four years and was played only once at Bramall Lane in 1867. It was contested by 12 Sheffield teams and won by Hallam FC.
Keith Hackett, director of tournament organisers You-Are-The-Ref.com said, “The line-up for the 2017 tournament has exceeded all expectations – we’re absolutely thrilled with it.
“The Youdan Trophy is developing into the biggest and most prestigious tournament of its kind in the whole of Europe and we’re confident it will become a globally recognisable Sheffield brand in the coming years.”
