Liver­pool downs Hertha Berlin

Berlin, Ger­many - Jur­gen Klopp en­joyed a per­fect re­turn to Ger­many on Satur­day, as Liver­pool beat Hertha Berlin 3-0 in a pre-sea­son friendly with sum­mer sign­ings Do­minic Solanke and Mo­hamed Salah both on the score­sheet.

The game also saw Philippe Coutinho, who has been heav­ily linked with a US$93mn move to Barcelona, handed the cap­tain's arm­band, and the Liver­pool fans gave the Brazil­ian play­maker a rous­ing re­cep­tion.

Liver­pool opened the scor­ing on 15 min­utes, as Solanke rose to meet an Adam Lal­lana cross, send­ing a header over Rune Jarstein. Solanke was in­volved again as Liver­pool dou­bled its lead be­fore half time through Ge­orginio Wi­j­nal­dum. Salah made it 3-0 just af­ter the hour mark, pick­ing up a through ball from Coutinho to score.

The match was ar­ranged to cel­e­brate the 125th an­niver­sary of both clubs.

Arse­nal routs Ben­fica

Lon­don, UK - Theo Wal­cott gave Arsene Wenger a timely re­minder of his qual­i­ties with two goals in Arse­nal's 5-2 friendly thrash­ing of Por­tuguese cham­pion Ben­fica as Alexan­dre La­cazette made his Gun­ners home de­but in the Emi­rates Cup on Satur­day.

In Satur­day's other Emi­rates Cup match, Sevilla beat Ger­man League run­ner-up RB Leipzig 1-0 thanks to Wis­sam Ben Yed­der's 34th-minute penalty.
