Griffiths’ brace in Celtic's win
Leigh Griffiths struck twice as Celtic made a flying start to its Scottish Premiership title defence with a 4-1 thrashing of Hearts in Glasgow, UK, on Saturday. Griffiths opened the scoring in the 29th minute before Scott Sinclair made it 2-0 five minutes after the break at Parkhead. The Scotland striker's diving header added to Celtic's advantage before Callum McGregor's unstoppable strike made it four in the 73rd minute. Monaco begins season in style
Brazilian Neymar may dominate the headlines and bring renewed hope to Paris Saint-Germain but Monaco showed it won't be giving up its French League crown easily with a 3-2 win over Toulouse on Friday. Goals from Brazilian Jemerson, Colombia's Radamel Falcao and Kamil Glik of Poland allowed Monaco to twice come from behind and snatch three points.
Aussies call up Bird for injured Pattinson
Fast bowler Jackson Bird has replaced James Pattinson in Australia's squad for their upcoming tour of Bangladesh, starting on August 22. Pattinson has been ruled out of the tour with inflammation in his back. The loss of Pattinson is the second blow suffered by Australia's pace attack in less than 24 hours, with Mitchell Starc also ruled out. Leg-spinner Mitchell Swepson replaced Starc in the squad. The tour got its green signal following the resolution of the contracts dispute between Cricket Australia and the Australian Cricketers' Association on Thursday.
