Grif­fiths’ brace in Celtic's win

Leigh Grif­fiths struck twice as Celtic made a fly­ing start to its Scot­tish Pre­mier­ship ti­tle de­fence with a 4-1 thrash­ing of Hearts in Glas­gow, UK, on Satur­day. Grif­fiths opened the scor­ing in the 29th minute be­fore Scott Sin­clair made it 2-0 five min­utes af­ter the break at Park­head. The Scot­land striker's div­ing header added to Celtic's ad­van­tage be­fore Cal­lum McGre­gor's un­stop­pable strike made it four in the 73rd minute. Other re­sults: Dundee 1 Ross County 2, Hiber­nian 3 Partick 1, Kil­marnock 1 St John­stone 2.

Monaco be­gins sea­son in style

Brazil­ian Ney­mar may dom­i­nate the head­lines and bring re­newed hope to Paris Saint-Ger­main but Monaco showed it won't be giv­ing up its French League crown eas­ily with a 3-2 win over Toulouse on Fri­day. Goals from Brazil­ian Je­mer­son, Colom­bia's Radamel Fal­cao and Kamil Glik of Poland al­lowed Monaco to twice come from be­hind and snatch three points.

Aussies call up Bird for in­jured Pat­tin­son

Fast bowler Jack­son Bird has re­placed James Pat­tin­son in Aus­tralia's squad for their up­com­ing tour of Bangladesh, start­ing on Au­gust 22. Pat­tin­son has been ruled out of the tour with in­flam­ma­tion in his back. The loss of Pat­tin­son is the sec­ond blow suf­fered by Aus­tralia's pace at­tack in less than 24 hours, with Mitchell Starc also ruled out. Leg-spin­ner Mitchell Swep­son re­placed Starc in the squad. The tour got its green sig­nal fol­low­ing the res­o­lu­tion of the con­tracts dis­pute be­tween Cricket Aus­tralia and the Aus­tralian Crick­eters' As­so­ci­a­tion on Thurs­day.
