Camaro ZL1 hits 320kmph with ten-speed automatic transmission
With a top speed of 318kmph, the Camaro ZL1 Coupe is the fastest Camaro ever. Chevrolet recently put the ZL1’s performance capabilities to the test on the High Speed Oval at Germany’s Automotive Testing Papenburg GmBH proving ground. Boasting of 650hp, 6.2l V8 supercharged LT4 engine, with tenspeed automatic transmission, the ZL1 Coupe was able to achieve a 0-100 in a time of just 3.5 seconds.
Al Oppenheiser, Camaro chief engineer, said, “This test caps an impressive list of performance stats for the Camaro ZL1, which was designed to excel at every- thing. It’s the most capable and fastest Camaro ever.”
Engine performance aside, the ZL1’s aerodynamic design incorporates a balanced aerodynamic package that reduces lift without significantly affecting drag. Special aero features include a stanchion rear spoiler that offers an advantageous lift/drag ratio compared to a blade-style rear spoiler, and a patent-pending auxiliary transmission oil cooler cover that reduces front-end lift with no drag penalty. The front-to-rear aero balance was also fine-tuned for high-speed stability.
Oppenheiser said, “The ZL1 was developed with high-speed performance in mind. After testing the car in standard settings, which produced the 198mph (318kmph) average, we set the front and rear camber adjustments to 0 degrees and the tyre pressures to the maximum allowable sidewall pressure, and saw the ZL1 average over 200mph (321kmph).”
Chevrolet tested the ZL1 using the car’s production Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar 3 tyres with pressure set at 44psi, the recommended setting for extended high-speed driving. To ensure that the test results were a true reflection of the ZL1’s on-the- road performance, no performance enhancing modifications were made prior to testing. The car’s only deviations from stock were mandatory safety equipment and data logging equipment.
Additional performance capabilities of the ZL1 Coupe tested with the available ten-speed automatic transmission include 1.02g max cornering, 1000kmph braking in just 35m and covering a quarter mile in 11.4 seconds at 204kmph.
The Camaro ZL1 comes with a standard six-speed manual transmission with Active Rev Match or the all-new ten-speed automatic transmission. Additional features include Magnetic Ride Control, Electronic limitedslip differential (coupe only) and Brembo brakes with six-piston monobloc front calipers and twopiece rotors. The Camaro ZL1 was recently made available across Chevrolet showrooms in the Middle East in May and was well received by Camaro fans and auto enthusiasts alike.
Ahmed Soudodi, brand lead Chevrolet Middle East, said, “The Camaro needs no introduction. It is an iconic vehicle that has, for 50 years now, been a favourite amongst car enthusiasts in the Middle East. The ZL1’s honed de- sign and purpose built engineering has made it the most powerful production iteration of the Camaro to date, with an extraordinary performance that has made it an instant success since its introduction to showrooms in May.”
