Oman to host first all-women international tent pegging championship in Nov-Dec
Oman will host the inaugural International Women’s Tent Pegging Championship later this year.
Speaking to Muscat Daily after the completion of International Tent Pegging Federation (ITPF) World Cup Qualifiers in Salalah on Friday, Mohammed Issa al Fairuz, the chief of ITPF, said, “Khasab in the Musandam governorate has been picked as the venue for the inaugural edition of an all-women’s international tent pegging championship in November-December.”
He said that Oman will also field a team and the countries likely to take part are Great Britain, Australia, Russia, Egypt, Iraq, South Africa and Jordan.
“The dates are yet to be finalised but the ITPF board has approved the hosting of an all-
women’s championship. It will be a boost to women tent pegging and hopefully, it will help bring more women to the sport.”
Fairuz said that women riders
normally compete along with men in tent pegging competition but ITPF was keen to get more women riders involved.
“This is the reason why the board has given the green signal for an exclusive women's event. We expect seven-eight countries to take part in the Khasab championship,” he said.
In the recently-concluded World Cup Group A Qualifiers, the British team comprised one woman rider in Jenna Copley, who was also a member of the team that took part in the inaugural Tent Pegging World Cup in Barka, Oman in 2014. That event had four women riders from Britain and Australia among the ten participating teams. “The good thing [about tent pegging] is that it provides a level-playing field for men and women. It is a sport where speed and accuracy matter most. It is the ultimate test of horsemanship, requiring determination, hand-eye coordination, discipline and a fearless love of speed.”
He said that Khasab, with its beautiful landscape, will provide a perfect backdrop to the first allwomen’s championship. “This will be ITPF’s second international championship in Oman this year after the grand success of inaugural International Beach Tent Pegging Championship in Masirah in March. It underlines the major contribution of Oman in promoting the sport.
“I thank the Ministry of Sports Affairs and other government agencies for their full backing to tent pegging.”
