Oman Air on top ahead of final day in Hamburg
Oman Air With four runner-up finishes out of the seven races held on the penultimate day of Act Five in the 2017 Extreme Sailing Series (ESS), Oman Air was in pole position ahead of final day's action at Elbe river in Hamburg, Germany
Despite not winning any race on Saturday, Oman Air led the standings going into the final day with 92 points followed by Red Bull Sailing Team (84) and SAP Extreme Sailing Team (84). Alinghi is not far behind with 82, the same as NZ Extreme Sailing Team.
A total of five different winners emerged on Saturday with Oman Air skipper Phil Robertson and his crew displaying consistency to push themselves ahead. Having seized two out of two wins on Friday, Oman Air crew of Robertson, Pete Greenhalgh, Nasser al Mashari, James Wierzbowski and Ed Smyth will look to carry on their good show on Sunday.
“We started really well then struggled a bit at the end when the current changed,” said Robertson. “We also showed that you don’t have to win a race to win the day, or an event – consistency is everything and we managed to stay near the top for most races.
“It’s nice to have a buffer now, but it is so easy to lose eight points in this fleet, in one or two races it can be all gone. But it’s nice to have had two good days in a row.”
Mashari said, “It is a good position to be in. Anything can happen on the final day but it would be great to build on our success in Barcelona and take win in Hamburg.”
In the Flying Phantom Series, Oman Sail ended its second day of racing in fifth place overall after a total of eight races. The rotating crew of Thomas Normand, Ahmed al Hasani and Antoine Joubert added a second place finish to its roster of results among the 12-strong fleet of two-man foiling catamarans.
Act 5 standings after day three: 1 Oman Air (92), 2 Red Bull Sailing Team (84), 3 SAP Extreme Sailing Team (84), 4 Alinghi (82), 5 NZ Extreme Sailing Team (82), 6 Land Rover BAR Academy (80), 7 Team Extreme (63).
