Marquez romps to Austrian GP pole
World champion Marc Marquez on a Honda stormed to pole position for Sunday's Austrian Grand Prix at Spielberg bei Knittelfeld on Saturday, ahead of Ducati pair Andrea Dovizioso and Jorge Lorenzo. Having won the last two GPs, three-time world champion Marquez has a 14-point lead in the standings over Maverick Vinales, who was fourth on Saturday with his Yamaha teammate Valentino Rossi seventh. It is a third straight pole for the Spaniard.
Zidane to extend Real contract
Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane confirmed on Saturday he will sign a contract extension in the near future with the club he has guided to back-to-back Champions League titles. "I'm happy because it's a sign of confidence, that we have done good work," Zidane told a pre-match press conference ahead of Real's Spanish Super Cup showdown with Barcelona. Madrid sports daily AS reported the Frenchman will be rewarded with a threeyear deal for his feats in not only delivering two Champions Leagues in just 20 months in charge, but also Real's first Spanish League title for five years.
Ailing Lee gives up IOC membership
The bedridden head of South Korea's Samsung Group has given up his IOC membership, the Olympics governing body announced on Saturday. "The IOC EB (executive board) was informed that the family of Kun-Hee Lee has asked the IOC not to consider Lee for re-election as an IOC member" when the IOC is due to elect nine new members at a session next month in Lima, Peru. Lee was first elected as an IOC member in 1996. He helped to bring the 2018 Winter Games to Pyeongchang, South Korea.
