Mar­quez romps to Aus­trian GP pole

World cham­pion Marc Mar­quez on a Honda stormed to pole po­si­tion for Sun­day's Aus­trian Grand Prix at Spielberg bei Knittelfeld on Satur­day, ahead of Du­cati pair An­drea Dovizioso and Jorge Lorenzo. Hav­ing won the last two GPs, three-time world cham­pion Mar­quez has a 14-point lead in the stand­ings over Mav­er­ick Vi­nales, who was fourth on Satur­day with his Yamaha team­mate Valentino Rossi seventh. It is a third straight pole for the Spa­niard.

Zi­dane to ex­tend Real con­tract

Real Madrid coach Zine­dine Zi­dane con­firmed on Satur­day he will sign a con­tract ex­ten­sion in the near fu­ture with the club he has guided to back-to-back Cham­pi­ons League ti­tles. "I'm happy be­cause it's a sign of con­fi­dence, that we have done good work," Zi­dane told a pre-match press con­fer­ence ahead of Real's Span­ish Su­per Cup show­down with Barcelona. Madrid sports daily AS re­ported the French­man will be re­warded with a three­year deal for his feats in not only de­liv­er­ing two Cham­pi­ons Leagues in just 20 months in charge, but also Real's first Span­ish League ti­tle for five years.

Ail­ing Lee gives up IOC mem­ber­ship

The bedrid­den head of South Korea's Sam­sung Group has given up his IOC mem­ber­ship, the Olympics gov­ern­ing body an­nounced on Satur­day. "The IOC EB (ex­ec­u­tive board) was in­formed that the fam­ily of Kun-Hee Lee has asked the IOC not to con­sider Lee for re-elec­tion as an IOC mem­ber" when the IOC is due to elect nine new mem­bers at a ses­sion next month in Lima, Peru. Lee was first elected as an IOC mem­ber in 1996. He helped to bring the 2018 Win­ter Games to Pyeongchang, South Korea.
