OMAN BLANKS IRAQ IN DAVIS CUP
2018 DAVIS CUP ASIA/OCEANIA GROUP IV Hosts Oman continued its impressive run for the second consecutive day as it ran a 3-0 victor against Iraq in a Pool A match of the Davis Cup Asia/Oceania Group IV competition at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex on Tuesday.
The second successive win for Oman put it on top of the six-team pool and on path of its goal to top the group.
Oman's most experienced player Mohammed al Nabhani proved that he still has enough left in him to shoulder the onus of the sultanate’s hopes as he won his singles and then along with Abdullah al Barwani won the crucial doubles to keep Oman's slate clean so far.
On Tuesday, Nabhani provided a perfect start as he did on Monday during Oman's 3-0 win over Bangladesh. He claimed a 6-3, 6-3 win over Iraq's Akram Abdalkarem al Saady in the first singles rubber.
In the second rubber, young Barwani showed great fighting spirit to defeat Ali Khairi Hashim al Mayahi 6-5, 5-7, 6-2.
In the doubles match, Barwani and Nabhani were stretched to the limit by Adel Mustafa al Saedi and Barakat Zainy.
However, the Omani duo won 6-1, 6-7, 7-5 in a match that lasted two hours and 43 minutes match.
Speaking after the doubles win, Nabhani said, “We had a long day. Obviously we are feeling great after our tremendous efforts and well-deserved wins.”
“The players are in good form and in great shape. We are happy as a team and I hope we keep going on and on. We hope to continue with our winning momentum.”
On Wednesday, Oman will play Kyrgyzstan. However, Nabhani warned against any complacency. He said, “There are no easy opponents in Davis Cup. We will be taking every opponent seriously and play with good energy and give our best in every match.”
