OMAN BLANKS IRAQ IN DAVIS CUP

2018 DAVIS CUP ASIA/OCEA­NIA GROUP IV Hosts Oman con­tin­ued its im­pres­sive run for the sec­ond con­sec­u­tive day as it ran a 3-0 vic­tor against Iraq in a Pool A match of the Davis Cup Asia/Ocea­nia Group IV com­pe­ti­tion at the Sul­tan Qa­boos Sports Com­plex on Tues­day.

The sec­ond suc­ces­sive win for Oman put it on top of the six-team pool and on path of its goal to top the group.

Oman's most ex­pe­ri­enced player Mo­hammed al Nab­hani proved that he still has enough left in him to shoul­der the onus of the sul­tanate’s hopes as he won his sin­gles and then along with Ab­dul­lah al Bar­wani won the cru­cial dou­bles to keep Oman's slate clean so far.

On Tues­day, Nab­hani pro­vided a per­fect start as he did on Mon­day dur­ing Oman's 3-0 win over Bangladesh. He claimed a 6-3, 6-3 win over Iraq's Akram Ab­dalka­rem al Saady in the first sin­gles rub­ber.

In the sec­ond rub­ber, young Bar­wani showed great fight­ing spirit to de­feat Ali Khairi Hashim al Mayahi 6-5, 5-7, 6-2.

In the dou­bles match, Bar­wani and Nab­hani were stretched to the limit by Adel Mustafa al Saedi and Barakat Zainy.

How­ever, the Omani duo won 6-1, 6-7, 7-5 in a match that lasted two hours and 43 min­utes match.

Speak­ing af­ter the dou­bles win, Nab­hani said, “We had a long day. Ob­vi­ously we are feel­ing great af­ter our tremen­dous ef­forts and well-de­served wins.”

“The play­ers are in good form and in great shape. We are happy as a team and I hope we keep go­ing on and on. We hope to con­tinue with our win­ning mo­men­tum.”

On Wed­nes­day, Oman will play Kyr­gyzs­tan. How­ever, Nab­hani warned against any com­pla­cency. He said, “There are no easy op­po­nents in Davis Cup. We will be tak­ing ev­ery op­po­nent se­ri­ously and play with good en­ergy and give our best in ev­ery match.”

Closely trail­ing Oman in Pool A is UAE, which de­feated Bangladesh 2-1, for its sec­ond suc­ces­sive vic­tory. In an­other Pool A tie, Myan­mar beat Kyr­gyzs­tan 3-0.

Mean­while, Sin­ga­pore re­mains on top of Pool B af­ter de­feat­ing Ta­jik­istan 3-0 for its sec­ond win of the com­pe­ti­tion.

In other Pool B ties, Guam beat Mon­go­lia 3-0 and Bahrain de­feated Turk­menistan 2-1. Wed­nes­day’s fix­tures: Pool A: Iraq vs Bangladesh, Oman vs Kyr­gyzs­tan, UAE vs Myan­mar. Pool B: Bahrain vs Ta­jik­istan, Sin­ga­pore vs Mon­go­lia, Turk­menistan vs Guam.
