Train derails in Uttar Pradesh, 6 killed
Rae Bareli, India - Six persons were killed when a train derailed in Rae Bareli in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday, officials said.
More than 60 people were also injured when the New Farakka Express derailed near Harchandpur around 6:05am. Nine passengers have been critically injured, a police officer said.
Most of the passengers were asleep when the disaster took place. A passenger said that he woke up after hearing a loud thud. “Two coaches turned turtle,” he said. “The first to come to the help of the trapped passengers were fellow passengers as well as villagers.”
It was not immediately clear what caused the derailment.
Railway Minister Piyush Goyal announced an ex-gratia of R500,000 each to the families of those killed.
‘I have ordered an inquiry into the accident’, Goyal said in a statement.
