Train derails in Ut­tar Pradesh, 6 killed

Rae Bareli, In­dia - Six per­sons were killed when a train de­railed in Rae Bareli in the north­ern In­dian state of Ut­tar Pradesh on Wed­nes­day, of­fi­cials said.

More than 60 peo­ple were also in­jured when the New Farakka Ex­press de­railed near Harchand­pur around 6:05am. Nine pas­sen­gers have been crit­i­cally in­jured, a po­lice of­fi­cer said.

Most of the pas­sen­gers were asleep when the dis­as­ter took place. A pas­sen­ger said that he woke up af­ter hear­ing a loud thud. “Two coaches turned tur­tle,” he said. “The first to come to the help of the trapped pas­sen­gers were fel­low pas­sen­gers as well as vil­lagers.”

It was not im­me­di­ately clear what caused the de­rail­ment.

Rail­way Min­is­ter Piyush Goyal an­nounced an ex-gra­tia of R500,000 each to the fam­i­lies of those killed.

‘I have or­dered an in­quiry into the ac­ci­dent’, Goyal said in a state­ment.
