Balushi fin­ishes over­all 21st

Mus­cat - Oman’s 15 year old sailor Mo­hammed al Balushi, who be­gan his cam­paign in the Wind­surfer-Techno 293+ class at the Youth Olympic Games with an en­cour­ag­ing 12th place failed to main­tain his mo­men­tum and ended over­all 21st among the 24 par­tic­i­pants on Fri­day.

Greece’s Alexan­dros Kal­pogian­nakis claimed the ti­tle at the Club Nau­tico San Isidro, Buenos Aires, Ar­gentina.

The medal race was held af­ter the fleets com­pleted 11 races in the se­ries on Fri­day. Italy’s Ni­colo Renna and Bri­tain’s Finn Hawkins took the sil­ver and bronze re­spec­tively. Kal­pogian­nakis had a to­tal of 23 net points (to­tal 36).

Balushi’s best fin­ish was 12th and the next best was 13th in the third race. Fol­low­ing the dis­ap­point­ment of a DNC (did not start) and a DNF (did not fin­ish) in fourth and fifth races re­spec­tively, Balushi could never re­gain the lost ground de­spite a fight­ing 15th in the sev­enth race.

Two 17th-place fin­ish was fol­lowed by a ‘U’ flag dis­qual­i­fi­ca­tion in the penul­ti­mate race to make mat­ters worse. And in the medal rank­ing fi­nal race, Balushi came 18th to score a net 203 (to­tal 228) for an over­all 21st place.
