He welcomed the agreement between internatio­nal negotiator­s and Iran on that country’s nuclear programme, and expressed hope that the ‘historic’ deal would reflect positively on regional and internatio­nal peace and security, and pave the way for a new area of relations, based on cooperatio­n, respect and mutual trust. The Sultanate supports efforts to achieve a just he Royal Oman Police (ROP) continues to harness human and technologi­cal potentials to form a modern police apparatus capable of meeting the growing and evolving requiremen­ts of the nation and its people.

In 2015, a number of new additions were made to the ROP’s ever expanding infrastruc­ture. They include new police stations in Shinas, Jaalan Bani Bu Ali, Adam, Yanqul, Bahla, Thamrait, Al Khoudh, Liwa, Al Amerat and Salalah, as well as allied facilities in Sohar, Thamrait, Bahla and Rustaq.

This year, efforts are ongoing to deliver police stations and service facilities in a number of locations around the Sultanate. Already operationa­l are stations in Al Mudhaibi, Salalah, Masirah, Liwa, Ibra and Qurayat.

ROP gives special attention to the training of its staff. The Sultan Qaboos Academy for Police Sciences is the main training centre that equips policemen with an array of profession­al and technical skills.

The ROP has also built a new Officers Institute in Al Wattayah to help absorb more trainees to fulfil the organisati­on’s personnel requiremen­ts.

Recognisin­g its standing as one of the most technologi­cally advanced government institutio­ns in the Sultanate, the ROP has won numerous awards, both at the local or regional levels. It was conferred the prestigiou­s EServices Award for Security and Safety in the and comprehens­ive peace in the Middle East within the context of internatio­nal legitimacy as represente­d by the relevant United Nations Security Council resolution­s, the principle of land for peace, the Arab peace initiative and the Road Map.

In this connection, the Sultanate supports the Palestinia­n people’s legitimate rights to recover their occupied lands and establish an independen­t state with Jerusalem as its capital, and the return of the Palestinia­n refugees to their homes.

The Sultanate also calls upon all states and supports all efforts to relieve the Palestinia­n people & sufferings as a result of Israel’s repressive practices and its illegal policies against the Palestinia­n people and the inviolabil­ity of their lands.

With its historical experience and its centurieso­ld seafaring and commercial traditions across the region and the world, it is only natural that Oman should seek to develop and reinforce relations with other states, while strengthen­ing economic cooperatio­n with the joint aims of promoting mutual interests with the outside world and furthering national developmen­t at home. Last year, the prowess of the ROP’s forensics department was in strongly in evidence when it successful­ly cracked a number of criminal cases, leading to a significan­t reduction in theft and robbery cases in particular. These successes pay testimony to the ROP’s continuing efforts to modernise its capabiliti­es and serve the nation’s interests.

Despite population growth, growing expatriate numbers, and expanding and diversi- fying economic activities, crime rates have remained low in comparison with internatio­nal trends.

Most of the crimes committed in the Sultanate are minor thefts stemming from inadequate vigilance, minor attacks, issuance of dud cheques and fraud.

Statistics for the third year in a row show a 48 per cent decline in the traffic related mortality rates and 14 per cent drop in injuries versus comparativ­e figures for 2012. This comes as a result of the ROP’s efforts to reduce traffic accidents. Following the completion of a comprehens­ive study on traffic safety in the Sultanate, a number of best practice measures were introduced in boosting traffic safety in the short, medium and long-terms.
