Grandeur of the Grand Mosque

The Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque located in the heart of Muscat Governorat­e ranks as one of the top tourist attraction­s in the country drawing visitors from different parts of the world.

The mosque, which can accommodat­e 20,000 workshippe­rs, receives hundreds of visitors every morning.

Completed in 2001, it took six years to build the mosque which covers an area of 416,000 square metres.

A total of 300,000 tonnes of sandstone has been used in the constructi­on of the Grand Mosque, whose main entrance has three high arches. A 4,263-square metre colourful carpet adorns the main prayer hall. The mosque is open for tourists from 8 am to 11 am for nonMuslim visitors every day except Friday. Visitors can get an ‘ audio tour device’ which will help provide accurate informatio­n about the place.

The visitor entrance (south) also has a shopping area, where they can get different types of gifts and publicatio­ns.
