SPECIAL EMPHASIS TO THE RICH CIVILISATION

- STAFF REPORTER MUSCAT, FEB 27

The Muscat International Book Fair 2017 places special emphasis on the rich civilisation and history of Sohar through a rich collection of books. The city has been rightly named the Guest of Honour this year as a tribute to its role in the past as Oman’s ancient capital. With the shifting of commercial operations to Sohar in the last couple of years, the city’s role is as significant as it has been in the past.

The Sohar corner at the book fair stands tall with books displaying its richness in literature and prominence as an important coastal city.

The stall, inspired by the Sohar Gate, reflects the Islamic architecture that still stands strong amid the rare photographs captured during His Majesty the Sultan’s visits to the city.

Visitors can also have a glimpse of the annual international sculptors’ camp held on one of the hilly parts of the region. There is also participation from a number of authors whose books are on display. Writer Hassan al Balushi’s book contains a lot of valuable information about the city which can be useful for researchers.

The fair also sees participation from a number of poets and signing ceremonies that are generally followed by open and direct interaction with the authors.

There are many cultural events organised at the al Farahidi Hall (Suhar lab). Not to forget the working papers presented on the city in addition to poetry-reading sessions.

Special attractions at the book fair yesterday included a general knowledge contest in which winners got received attractive cash prizes.

A public speaking workshop was held in the presence of Yusuf al Ameri, Ghassan al Tamimi and Nasser al Ameri. A special corner was opened yesterday that contained books for the visually impaired children.

A special scientific village has been set up that continues to be one of the major highlights for children this time.
