Rehan stuns Mayank, enters semi-finals
MUSCAT: Rehan Ahmed caused the first major upset at the Open Table Tennis Tournament organised by the Indian Social Club Oman and sponsored by Al-Tasnim Enterprises LLC.
In a thrilling second round match of the boys under-14 singles, Rehan fought back from two games down to stun the top seed, Mayank Mehta with scores of 7-11, 5-11, 11-6, 11-9, 111-9 and followed it up with a convincing 11-5, 11-4, 11-7 victory over Anirudh Menon in the quarter finals to reach the last four stage. Joining Rehan in the last four of the boys under-14 are second seed Adhyatm Sharma who scored in impressive 11-8, 11-8, 11-7 win over Kahan Ajay, third seed Viren Kundnani who defeated Kailas Sunil 11-6, 11-3, 11-7 and fourth seed Vedant Bahirat who beat Harikrishna Biju 11-2, 11-3, 11-5.
The tournament got underway with a hectic first day’s play with matches in the girl’s under-14 singles played over a round robin league. After the completion of the round robin phase, Manvi Saravanan, Dimple Malawiya, Aditi Sawant and Sahana Sandesh qualified from their respective goups and emerged into the semi-finals.
Manvi Saravanan, Tanishqa Mishra, Akshara Pateriya and Maryam Zohair qualified for the semi-finals of the girls under-17 singles after the completion of the round robin phase.
