Thar of Sindh possibly turns green like Kashmir
THAR: Thar areas of Sindh can be shaped green like Kashmir claimed by small land holders and community activists during a workshop in local hotel of Umer Kot district. The training workshop organized by Institute of Rural Management (IRM) Sindh region with title of Capacity Building / Hands-on Exercise for Farmers and Community Activists under the aegis of Sustainable Land Management Program (SLMP II) of Sindh Government, Ministry of Climate Change, Govt. of Pakistan and UNDP Pakistan. The citizens of Umer Kot representing the farming communities have claimed that they can shape Thar of Sindh as Kashmir but if there is the full support of the government and the policies focusing integrated agriculture and climate change.
Provincial Program CoordinatorSindh of the Sustainable Land Management Program (SLMP-II, UNDP/Planning &Development Department, and Government of Sindh) - Mr. Zulfiqar Ali Laghari also spoke with the farmers and the community activists for the support through the SLMP, phase-II contribut- ing in Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) # 13 and 15.
Addressing the participants for workshop objectives the Regional Manager Sindh IRM – Mr. Kashif Siddiqui addressed all the workshop participants including men and women. He informed that the IRM and its interventions of capacity building and governance are ongoing for last 25 years and contributing in meeting the targets of SDGs and other basic human rights of the communi- ties. The workshop trainer from SLMP-II, Mr. Akbar Dars discussed in detail the current agricultural practices and decreasing yields, besides the drought situation. Through group work of participants, Mr. Dars exercised the SWOT analysis also. Through this the farmers / workshop participants have come to know the strengths & opportunities of Thar land, agriculture & the new technologies and weakness & threats due to current climate change.
