Thar of Sindh pos­si­bly turns green like Kash­mir

THAR: Thar ar­eas of Sindh can be shaped green like Kash­mir claimed by small land hold­ers and com­mu­nity ac­tivists dur­ing a work­shop in local ho­tel of Umer Kot dis­trict. The train­ing work­shop or­ga­nized by In­sti­tute of Ru­ral Man­age­ment (IRM) Sindh re­gion with ti­tle of Ca­pac­ity Build­ing / Hands-on Ex­er­cise for Farm­ers and Com­mu­nity Ac­tivists un­der the aegis of Sus­tain­able Land Man­age­ment Pro­gram (SLMP II) of Sindh Gov­ern­ment, Min­istry of Cli­mate Change, Govt. of Pak­istan and UNDP Pak­istan. The cit­i­zens of Umer Kot rep­re­sent­ing the farm­ing com­mu­ni­ties have claimed that they can shape Thar of Sindh as Kash­mir but if there is the full sup­port of the gov­ern­ment and the poli­cies fo­cus­ing in­te­grated agri­cul­ture and cli­mate change.

Pro­vin­cial Pro­gram Co­or­di­na­torSindh of the Sus­tain­able Land Man­age­ment Pro­gram (SLMP-II, UNDP/Plan­ning &De­vel­op­ment Depart­ment, and Gov­ern­ment of Sindh) - Mr. Zul­fiqar Ali Laghari also spoke with the farm­ers and the com­mu­nity ac­tivists for the sup­port through the SLMP, phase-II con­tribut- ing in Sus­tain­able De­vel­op­ment Goals (SDGs) # 13 and 15.

Ad­dress­ing the par­tic­i­pants for work­shop ob­jec­tives the Re­gional Manager Sindh IRM – Mr. Kashif Sid­diqui ad­dressed all the work­shop par­tic­i­pants in­clud­ing men and women. He in­formed that the IRM and its in­ter­ven­tions of ca­pac­ity build­ing and gov­er­nance are on­go­ing for last 25 years and con­tribut­ing in meet­ing the tar­gets of SDGs and other ba­sic hu­man rights of the com­muni- ties. The work­shop trainer from SLMP-II, Mr. Ak­bar Dars dis­cussed in de­tail the cur­rent agri­cul­tural prac­tices and de­creas­ing yields, be­sides the drought sit­u­a­tion. Through group work of par­tic­i­pants, Mr. Dars ex­er­cised the SWOT anal­y­sis also. Through this the farm­ers / work­shop par­tic­i­pants have come to know the strengths & op­por­tu­ni­ties of Thar land, agri­cul­ture & the new tech­nolo­gies and weakness & threats due to cur­rent cli­mate change.
