Tax evaders: No more dodg­ing!

miss­ing out Rs. 79 over ev­ery col­lec­tion of Rs. 100 in taxes. Thus, a loss of Rs. 1.27 tril­lion to the gov­ern­ment on the hands of tax eva­sion calls for a se­vere crack­down of the evaders.

The claims of the FBR about catch­ing the evaders stand on two op­tions; is­suance of 700,000 no­tices for with­held taxes to af­flu­ent Pak­ista­nis and a pilot pro­ject of us­ing the tracker soft­ware to spot in­stances of tax eva­sion.

The dis­mal sit­u­a­tion of the wealth­i­est cit­i­zens of Pak­istan go­ing on fre­quent for­eign trips and pos­sess­ing ex­trav­a­gant cas­tles but no tax num­ber in­di­cates that they are not just ready to pay taxes now but also have never paid tax ever be­fore.

Once the FBR tracker starts func­tion­ing, it would be­come pos­si­ble to lo­cate in­comes, as­sets and ex­pen­di­tures and as­sign penal­ties. If the gov­ern­ment suc­ceeds in penalty set­ting, bil­lions of dol­lars could be re­cov­ered
