With the total size of the Information Technology sector in Pakistan currently estimated at about US $2.8 billion and a growth potential of $5 billion, the country can look forward to tremendous opportunities of enhancement and new opportunities in the sector in coming years. However, what is needed to accelerate this growth is a proactive approach on part of the government as well as the corporate, industrial and education sector so that the requisite environment is established and more new areas of entrepreneurship are opened.

Teradata Corporation is one organization in Pakistan that has played a trailblazing role in promoting the country’s IT sector by instituting the Teradata National IT Excellence Awards, a program that was started in 1997 and today is the largest awards event of its kind, rewarding exemplary work in 12 categories related to IT.

The 10th Annual National IT Excellence Awards ceremony is to be held in March this year in Karachi where outstanding achievements by individuals in the Pakistan’s Information Technology (IT) community will be recognized. Nominations for the awards closed on January 6. The basic idea behind the Awards is to recognize those distinguished individuals who will usher the country into a new era of prosperity through Information Technology. Teradata is dedicated to supporting these future leaders to spur IT growth and innovation in Pakistan.

Says Khuram Rahat, Managing Director Teradata Pakistan: “We look forward to recognizing those individuals that have had the greatest impact on the Pakistan IT community – we are looking for the best-of-the-best. The program has grown ever since we launched it in 1997, as part of Pakistan’s Golden Jubilee, which recognizes professionals in the IT industry.”

To maintain neutrality and transparency in the nomination and evaluation process, Teradata has engaged KPMG Taseer Hadi & Co. as an independent auditor to receive and compile nominations that were received through the website www.teradata-awards.com. The firm will also work with the judges who have been selected on the basis of their expertise and leadership in education, IT and related fields.

The awards will be presented in 12 categories covering excellence in IT Business Intelligence, Software Exports, Software Development, Networking, IT Education, IT Enabled Software Offering, IT Project Management, IT Research and Development and IT Media and Publication in addition to Best IT Student, Lifetime Achievement and C.I.O. of the Year.

Teradata is the world’s largest company focused solely on creating enterprise agility through enterprise data warehousing, data warehouse appliances and analytics. Every day it pushes analytical intelligence deeper into operational execution, enhancing efficiency and transforming corporate culture. It has been celebrating true IT innovators who are striving to capture this future vision. Teradata Pakistan has partnered with Pakistani businesses in many sectors including telecom, financial, travel and retail to help them grow.

The company offers Pakistani businesses an entire platform with enterprise class capability for today’s competitive environments. It acts as a trusted advisor in presenting a range of options, rather than following the approach of “one size, one price” fits all. As a result, it is able to offer customers best- in- class support, ease of use, affordable, low total cost of ownership, a single view of the business, a familiar toolset and a compelling foundation for business intelligence.

In the opinion of Christopher Armitage, Area Vice President, Teradata, “Teradata is committed to the Pakistan market and we are excited about the addition of new customers. We are optimistic about the future and finding new ways to bring innovative data warehousing and analytic data solutions to our customers.”

No wonder then that Teradata has been recognized by analysts, publications and think-tank groups for its leadership in business, data warehousing and enterprise analytics. It is positioned as a leader by Gartner. In the latest Data Warehouse DBMS Magic Quadrant issued by Gartner, Teradata earned top placement in CRM Multichannel Campaign Management. It has also been rated as the industry’s top strategic database platform in the “Current Offering” category in “The Forrester Wave™: Enterprise Data Warehousing Platforms”, by Forrester Research.

Teradata was named one of the world’s Most Ethical Companies in 2010 by the Ethisphere Institute for the second year. In 2010, it was named one of the world’s “Top Ten Most Strategic IT Vendors” by Informationweek, which has recognized Teradata in its annual lists. In 2010, Teradata was selected for the eighth time by Intelligent Enterprise for the magazine’s Editors’ Choice Awards - the elite list of 12 technology providers that lead the way in innovation and business optimization. Teradata and its customers also have a strong record of winning marketing awards from the National Center for Database Marketing.

Through the years Teradata Pakistan has demonstrated that it is also a socially responsible corporate citizen. It financed the education of 2500 school children for one year in collaboration with Red Crescent Society, provided flood relief through its Teradata Cares program while the Teradata University Network and Teradata Podium Power programs have supported education .
