IDEAS 2012 opens new doors

The sev­enth edi­tion of the In­ter­na­tional De­fence Ex­hi­bi­tion and Sem­i­nar (IDEAS) held in Karachi, drew del­e­gates from more than 50 coun­tries. They com­prised se­nior of­fi­cials, trade vis­i­tors, de­fence min­is­ters, sec­re­taries and ser­vice chiefs. Some 209 firms also ex­hib­ited their prod­ucts at the event, of which 135 were for­eign firms and 74 Pak­istani com­pa­nies.

The ex­hibitors pro­moted their mil­i­tary hard­ware at the ex­hi­bi­tion and made new busi­ness con­tacts. The Pak­istani de­fence in­dus­try had a spe­cial pres­ence at the show and had the op­por­tu­nity to cap­i­talise on the grow­ing se­cu­rity con­cerns at the global level. Pak­istani com­pa­nies that man­u­fac­ture mil­i­tary equip­ment for the armed forces were con­fi­dent that the ex­hi­bi­tion will open new busi­ness av­enues for them.

Com­modore Sid­diq Ak­bar, Di­rec­tor Me­dia of the De­fence Ex­port Pro­mo­tion Or­ga­ni­za­tion (DEPO), Min­istry of De­fence Pro­duc­tion, said, “De­spite the fact that the Ex­hi­bi­tion is be­ing held af­ter a gap of four years, we have re­ceived an over­whelm­ing re­sponse from ex­hibitors from around the globe.”

A sep­a­rate space was al­lo­cated for de­fence com­pa­nies from China, North Amer­ica, South Amer­ica and Europe which dis­played var­i­ous mil­i­tary weapons in­clud­ing bat­tle tanks, fighter air­craft and UAVs. Along with the IDEAS ex­hi­bi­tion, s the In­ter­na­tional De­fence Sem­i­nar was also held with Side Line Con­fer­ences that dis­cussed chal­lenges faced by the Armed Forces of Pak­istan in par­tic­u­lar, and in­ter­na­tional forces in gen­eral. In ad­di­tion, sev­eral high-level meet­ings were held be­tween for­eign del­e­gates, key government of­fi­cials and trade vis­i­tors and av­enues for forg­ing al­liance in de­fence pro­duc­tion were dis­cussed.
