Road to Austerity

Enterprise - - Editor's Desk - Ayesha Haq Multan

The new Prime Minister will reportedly cut down on his administrative expenses, have a lean cabinet of ministers and exercise economy where possible. The Chief Ministers of all the four provinces will follow suit and will not indulge in extravaganzas. Some of them may even not reside in their palatial official residences to control provincial expenses. Can the same spirit of austerity be inculcated in the general populace as well? Can Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif take up the challenge of leading his countrymen to a path of austerity in all spheres of public life? Perhaps, he could make a beginning by bringing in legislation that prevents extravagant spending at weddings. It will be a big boon if he succeeds in doing so and will certainly set the tone for all round austerity at the national level.
