Apricot is a fruit that is grown in much abundance in the mountainous regions of Balochistan, KPK and the northern areas. Though there is considerable demand for this fruit in world markets as it is not grown in many other countries, Pakistani exporters have failed to take advantage of this overseas demand. All that happens to the apricot crop is that it is either sold in local markets, is used as fodder for cattle or the surplus is allowed to rot.
It is time that fruit exporters paid due attention to apricot and focused on its proper breeding with a view to exporting it to world markets. They need to explore those markets where the fruit is in greater demand so as to cultivate it in a manner that it meets their requirements. Local horticulturists must also take a serious look at apricot cultivation and work towards further improving its quality.
