ECP seeks defaulters list in 48 hours
Condition of bank accounts for prospective candidates relaxed
ISLAMABAD— Election Commission of Pakistan has tasked different government authorities to provide the lists of defaulters in 48 hours.
In this regard, notifications have been issued to Water & Power Development Authority ( WAPDA, Pakistan Telecommunication Authority, National Telecommunication Corporation, Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited, Sui Southern Gas Company Limited, and Ministry of Housing & Works.
According to sources, ECP in its written directives sent to all the aforementioned authorities has stressed they meet the deadline given so that the electoral scrutiny could be completed in time.
The administrations of Punjab House, KPK House, Sindh House and Balochistan House have also been directed to provide details of the outstanding dues the defaulters owe to different utilities.
Moreover, the private utility organizations have also been asked to provide lists of defaulters.
Earlier, ECP Additional Secretary, Afzal Khan, said that all the government, au-
tonomous, private utility organizations had been asked to provide the lists of defaulters.
Meanwhile, the Election Commission of Pakistan relaxed the conditions of opening a new bank account for the prospective election candidates to justify the election expenditures within the announced limi t s.
According to a notification issued by the ECP on Saturday, the authority has decided that all the prospective candidates who would file nomination papers on March 31, 2013 can either provide the number of their existing account in any bank, if any, or open new bank account and provide that number to the Returning Officers concerned on the day of scrutiny of their nomination papers.
The statement added that the decision was taken after a number of prospective candidates called the ECP and told t hem that it was not possible to open new bank accounts on March 31, 2013 given banks are closed on Sunday.
The candidates argued that since an account won’t be opened in time, they could not indicate an account number in the r el - evant column.
The offices of Election Commission Balochistan will remain open in holidays.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the Provincial Election Commissioner Balochistan Sultan Bayazeed said that offices would remain open on holidays in order to facilitate candidates to submit their nomination forms.
The candidates can also submit their nomination forms during weekly off days, he said.
