Mardan Region take edge in KP Inter-Region Women Athletics
Mardan Region took edge against other rivals team on the opening day of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Inter-Region Women Athletic Championship, which got under here at Qayyum Sports Complex under the aegis of the Directorate of Sports Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Saturday. Director Women Games, Directorate of Sports Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Miss Rashida Ghaznavi was the chief guest on this occasion. Former national basketball player Din Muhammad, Assistant Director Amir Zahir Shah, international athletic coach Jaffar Shah, Miss Shahana (Lakki Marwat), Miss Sitara (Kohat), Miss Gul Nar (Mardan), organizing Secretary Miss Raham Bibi and Najma Qazi, officials and players were also present on this occasion.
The opening ceremony was started with recitation of Holy Quran by prominent Naat Khawn Kinza Waheed (Hazara), followed by the teams of all seven regions including Dera Ismail Khan, Bannu, Kohat, Mardan, Malakand, Hazara and host Peahwar March Past.
Addressing the opening ceremony Miss Rashida Ghaznavi said that Director General Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Sports Board is very keen to have sports activities for the female. She said so far four activities including hockey, cricket, volleyball and basketball have been organized. She said after the athletic event, events of the table tennis, judo and squash would be organized in the month of April, followed by other games like Taekwondo, Karate, football, baseball, softball, netball will be organized. She said like last year the directorate would be organized 14 different games for the fe- male. She said the players would be provided all available facilities during the event. She also thanked the officials who are organizing various events and cooperation of the print and electronic media.
At the end, she announced opening of the athletic event. On the opening day Mardan Region dominated against other fellow team. Haseena of Mardan grabbed three gold medals of the 100m and 200m and shot put. There was a tough fight between Laila Akbar of Peshawar and Gul of Malakand in the High Jump as both competed for the gold medal. At the end Gul of Malakand took the gold medal after clearing a height of 4 feet while Laila got silver medal by clearing the same in the second attempt instead of first attempt by Gul.
