Mar­dan Re­gion take edge in KP In­ter-Re­gion Women Ath­let­ics

Mar­dan Re­gion took edge against other ri­vals team on the open­ing day of the Khy­ber Pakhtunkhwa In­ter-Re­gion Women Ath­letic Cham­pi­onship, which got un­der here at Qayyum Sports Com­plex un­der the aegis of the Di­rec­torate of Sports Khy­ber Pakhtunkhwa on Satur­day. Di­rec­tor Women Games, Di­rec­torate of Sports Khy­ber Pakhtunkhwa Miss Rashida Ghaz­navi was the chief guest on this oc­ca­sion. Former na­tional bas­ket­ball player Din Muham­mad, As­sis­tant Di­rec­tor Amir Zahir Shah, in­ter­na­tional ath­letic coach Jaf­far Shah, Miss Sha­hana (Lakki Mar­wat), Miss Si­tara (Ko­hat), Miss Gul Nar (Mar­dan), or­ga­niz­ing Sec­re­tary Miss Ra­ham Bibi and Na­jma Qazi, of­fi­cials and play­ers were also present on this oc­ca­sion.

The open­ing cer­e­mony was started with recita­tion of Holy Qu­ran by prom­i­nent Naat Khawn Kinza Wa­heed (Hazara), fol­lowed by the teams of all seven re­gions in­clud­ing Dera Is­mail Khan, Bannu, Ko­hat, Mar­dan, Malakand, Hazara and host Peah­war March Past.

Ad­dress­ing the open­ing cer­e­mony Miss Rashida Ghaz­navi said that Di­rec­tor Gen­eral Khy­ber Pakhtunkhwa Sports Board is very keen to have sports ac­tiv­i­ties for the fe­male. She said so far four ac­tiv­i­ties in­clud­ing hockey, cricket, vol­ley­ball and bas­ket­ball have been or­ga­nized. She said af­ter the ath­letic event, events of the ta­ble ten­nis, judo and squash would be or­ga­nized in the month of April, fol­lowed by other games like Taek­wondo, Karate, foot­ball, base­ball, soft­ball, net­ball will be or­ga­nized. She said like last year the di­rec­torate would be or­ga­nized 14 dif­fer­ent games for the fe- male. She said the play­ers would be pro­vided all avail­able fa­cil­i­ties dur­ing the event. She also thanked the of­fi­cials who are or­ga­niz­ing var­i­ous events and co­op­er­a­tion of the print and elec­tronic me­dia.

At the end, she an­nounced open­ing of the ath­letic event. On the open­ing day Mar­dan Re­gion dom­i­nated against other fel­low team. Haseena of Mar­dan grabbed three gold medals of the 100m and 200m and shot put. There was a tough fight be­tween Laila Ak­bar of Pe­shawar and Gul of Malakand in the High Jump as both com­peted for the gold medal. At the end Gul of Malakand took the gold medal af­ter clear­ing a height of 4 feet while Laila got sil­ver medal by clear­ing the same in the sec­ond at­tempt in­stead of first at­tempt by Gul. Mar­ium took bronze medal.—APP
