Es­sen­tial drug avail­abil­ity, pric­ing pol­icy to be re­vis­ited

ISLAMABAD—Min­istry of Na­tional Health Ser­vices, Reg­u­la­tions Co­or­di­na­tion and Phar­ma­ceu­ti­cal Man­u­fac­tur­ers have agreed in prin­ci­ple to re­visit the Es­sen­tial Drug Avail­abil­ity and Pric­ing Pol­icy. The ex­ist­ing drug pol­icy was dis­cussed thread­bare and there emerged con­sen­sus on amend­ments re­quired in the pol­icy for meet­ing the ob­jec­tives of avail­abil­ity of ef­fi­ca­cious, af­ford­able and qual­ity es­sen­tial drugs.

A meet­ing of the sub­com­mit­tees of the Con­venors con­sti­tuted by the Wafaqi Mo­hta­sib was held un­der the Chair­man­ship of Brig. (Retd) Dr. Muza­m­mil Has­san Na­jmi, Prof. Fauji Foun­da­tion Univer­sity Med­i­cal Col­lege, Islamabad and Dr. Inam ul Haq, For­mer Drugs Con­troller and Chair­man Qual­ity Con­trol Au­thor­ity and Dean and Di­rec­tor, Riphah In- sti­tute of Phar­ma­ceu­ti­cal Sci- ences, to study Mea­sures for Avail­abil­ity of Es­sen­tial Drugs at the Public Sec­tor Hos­pi­tals & Clin­ics, Drugs Pric­ing and Qual­ity Con­trol Mech­a­nism for Es­sen­tial Drugs.

The Honourable Wafaqi Mo­hta­sib Mr. M. Sal­man Faruqui was ap­prised by the Con­venors of the sub­com­mit­tee on the progress made to en­sure the avail­abil­ity of Es­sen­tial Drugs at af­ford­able prices. The Wafaqi Mo­hta­sib ap­pre­ci­ated the ef­forts of the Gov­ern­ment and the man­u­fac­tur­ers which are be­ing made to em­i­nent doc­tors, phar­ma­cists, drug man­u­fac­tur­ers and other stake hold­ers. He em­pha­sized the need for speedy fi­nal­iza­tion of the re­port as it af­fects the health of the peo­ple.
