KP squash teams con­fer Youth Games award on Qa­mar

PE­SHAWAR—To pay rich trib­ute to for­mer World Cham­pion leg­endary Qa­mar Za­man, the Khy­ber Pakhtunkhwa male and fe­male squash teams con­ferred their win­ning awards of the Quaid-e-Azam Na­tional Youth Games on him here Thurs­day.

Be­sides for­mer World Cham­pion Qa­mar Za­man, Vice Pres­i­dent Pak­istan Olympic As­so­ci­a­tion and for­mer Sports Min­is­ter Syed Aqil Shah, for­mer World No. 2 Mo­hib Ul­lah, Gen­eral Sec­re­tary AIPs Asia Am­jad Aziz Ma­lik, Di­rec­tor Op­er­a­tion KP Sports Board Tariq Mehmood, PSB Coaches Pervez Ali, She­hzad Mo­hib, mem­bers of the KP squash fe­male team com­pris­ing Ko­mal Khan, Laiba Ijaz, Kainat Khan, Maria Khan, Man­ager Nargis Ijaz, male team coach Sha­keel Khan, As­ghar Khan, in­ter­na­tional ath­letic coach Syed Jaf­far Shah, squash male team mem­bers were also present.

Speak­ing on the oc­ca­sion, Di­rec­tor Op­er­a­tion KP Sports Board Tariq Mehmood lauded the ef­forts of the KP male and fe­male teams for giv­ing stun­ning per­for­mances in the re­cently con­cluded First Quiad-e-Azam Na­tional Youth Games.

He said de­spite short time for hold­ing camps and tri­als, KP play­ers have given ex­cel­lent per­for­mance in the games.

He fur­ther stated that a re­quest would be for­warded to the gov­ern­ment for an­nounc­ing cash in­cen­tives for the medal­ists win­ners.

Amajd Aziz Ma­lik said that de­spite no tri- als and camp­ing, the play­ers of KP have given out­stand­ing per­for­mance in the Quaid-e-Azam Na­tional Youth games by tak­ing sec­ond po­si­tion.

He said over­all KP re­mained at sec­ond by win­ning 20 gold medal, 17 sil­ver and 41 bronze medals. He said it is a match­less per­for­mance of the KP con­tin­gent in the games. He urged the pro­vin­cial gov­ern­ment to come for­ward with cash in­cen­tives for the play­ers.

He said it is very as­ton­ish­ing on the part of the gov­ern­ment who did not take any step in this re­gard. Am­jad Aziz Ma­lik as­sured the play­ers that mem­bers of the KP Sports Writ­ers As­so­ci­a­tion would con­tinue pro­mot­ing sports in the prov­ince.

Syed Aqil Shah while ad­dress­ing the gath­er­ing warned that if the PTI gov­ern­ment is failed to pro­vide cash in­cen­tives to the medal win­ners of var­i­ous games, they would stage a “Darna” along with all the play­ers in front of the Chief Min­is­ter House.

He dis­closed that there is no short­age of funds but Im­ran Khan led PTI gov­ern­ment failed to fa­cil­i­tate the play­ers. He said with­out any tri­als and camps, the play­ers rep­re­sented KP in the Quaid-e-Azam Na­tional Youth Games and gave match­less per­for­mance.

At the end, the male and fe­male play­ers of squash awarded their medals and tro­phies to leg­endary Qa­mar Za­man with aim to pay trib­ute to his ser­vices he ren­dered for the pro­mo­tion of squash in the coun­try.—APP
