Girls Cup aimed at empowering girls: Australian HC
ISLAMABAD—The Australian High Commissioner (AHC) Margaret Adamson on Sunday said the PCB-AHC Girls Cup was aimed to empower girls and provide them with an opportunity to learn the value of teamwork and sportsmanship.
She said this while spaeaking at the closing ceremony of the PCB-AHC Girls Cup Cricket final played here at the Marghazar Cricket Ground.
The final was won by SOS School beating Mashal School. The AHC and the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) with the support of Serena Hotels hosted the inaugural PCBAHC Girls Cup.
The PCB-AHC Girls Cup brought together teams from four underprivileged schools including Pakistan Sweet Homes, SOS Schools, Islamabad Special Education School (Girls with Hearing Impairment) and Mashal Charity School to encourage girls to participate in sports and activities to enjoy a healthy lifestyle.
The girls also attended a week long coaching camp conducted by PCB coaches’ and first-class Pakistan female cricketers.
“Cricket in Pakistan and Australia is a shared passion for all and provides a wonderful vehicle for promoting and highlighting the importance of gender equality in sport and beyond,” she said.
Pakistan Sweet Homes’ Patron-in-chief Zamurd Khan while referring to the girls who participated in the event said I am very happy for the healthy activity conducted for them.
He also praised the AHC and PCB for initiating such a programme for the girls.
Aziz Bolani, CEO, Serena Hotels said our commitments to gender empowerment through sports initiatives found expression in the PCB-AHC Girls Cup.
“We believe that sports are a means to encourage healthy lifestyle, peace, tolerance and teamwork,” he said.
Nasir Iqbal, President Islamabad Cricket Association (ICA) was also present at the occasion.
At the end trophies and mementoes were presented to teams, players coaches etc.
