Peshawar win first gold in Men’s Squash event of KP U-23 Games

PESHAWAR—Peshawar clinched the first gold medal in the Men squash event part of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Un­der-23 Men and Women Games in progress at dif­fer­ent venues here on Wed­nes­day.

The Men squash event played at Qa­mar Za­man Squash Com­plex, Peshawar de­feated Bannu in the fi­nal by 2-0 when Saif Ul­lah and Ha­roon recorded vic­to­ries against their re­spec­tive ri­vals from Bannu Faizan and Saqib in straight sets.

For­mer World Cham­pion Qa­mar Za­man and Di­rec­tor Op­er­a­tion Tariq Mehmood graced the occasion as guests and dis­trib­ute the tro­phies and cash prizes among the po­si­tion hold­ers. Bannu recorded vic­tory against Hazara in the semi­fi­nal while Peshawar de­feated Mar­dan in the sec­ond semi-fi­nal by 2-0. Peshawar team also recorded vic­tory against Dera Is­mail Khan by 2-0.

In the gym­nas­tic event Peshawar recorded 199 points by win­ning the over­all tro­phy while Riaz of Peshawar was de­clared as best gym­nast who grabbed three in­di­vid­ual gold medal in ring, cross-bar and horse bar event. Be­sides him Sha­keel also won gold medal for Peshawar while Waqas and Sha­hab of Swat won one gold medal each. Mar­dan’s As­ghar got sil­ver medal, Ro­hul­lah of Swat, Muham­mad Gul of Peshawar also won two sil­ver medals each.

Swat re­mained at sec­ond by se­cur­ing 162 points, fol­lowed by Mar­dan with 63 points. In the hockey event Man­shera de­feated Dera Is­mail Khan by 3-1.

The hockey match played at Lala Ayub Hockey Sta­dium where Vice Pres­i­dent Pak­istan Hockey Fed­er­a­tion Muham­mad Saeed Khan for­mally in­au­gu­rated the tour­na­ment. Syed Zahir Shah, the or­ga­niz­ing sec­re­tary was also there. In the Bad­minton event played at Wadood Hall, Swat beat Kohat by 2-0, Bannu beat Mar­dan by 2-0 and Dera Is­mail Khan beat Hazara by 2-0. In the male vol­ley­ball event Bannu de­feated Kohat by 3-0 while Peshawar out­classed Swat by 3-0 to reach to the grand fi­nal.

In the Men Ta­ble Ten­nis Peshawar reached to the fi­nal with Fa­had Khaw­jah, Um­mam Khaw­jah and Haseeb de­feated An­zala, Faisal and Haider in straight sets.

In the Women event played at BISE Sports Com­plex, Jin­nah Col­lege for Women and Univer­sity Cam­pus grounds and Gym­na­sium, Peshawar and Hazara rac­ing up for tak­ing lead against each other. In the Base­ball event Peshawar and Hazara took berth into the fi­nal while Hazara stunned Peshawar Bad­minton team and moved to the semi-fi­nals. Peshawar de­feated Kohat by 7-0 in the first match of the Base­ball event while Bannu beat Swat, Hazara shocked Dera Is­mail Khan. Hazara de­feated Mar­dan be­fore reach­ing to the base­ball fi­nal of the women event.

Di­rec­tor Gen­eral Sports Miss Rashida Ghaz­navi is over­all su­per­vi­sion the fe­male events as she vis­ited each and ev­ery venue be­fore the com­pe­ti­tions to make en­sure all out fa­cil­i­ties to the fe­male play­ers dur­ing their stay at Peshawar.

In the Netball women Peshawar beat Dera Is­mail Khan by 7-3, Mar­dan beat Kohat by 3-0 in the vol­ley­ball event. The score was 25-21, 25-19 and 25-23. Bannu shocked Peshawar by 3-0 and Hazara out­classed Swat by 3-0 in the vol­ley­ball event and moved to the semi-fi­nal.

In Ta­ble Ten­nis Hazara and Mar­dan took berth into the fi­nal of the Bad­minton event while in hockey event Mar­dan beat Dera Is­mail Khan by 3-0 and Peshawar beat Swat by 2-0. —APP
