MIAN ARSHAD ISLAMABAD—Panama Leaks issue also echoed in the meeting of the Senate Standing Committee on Finance and Revenue where members voiced for clubbing inquiry into funds transaction for the pro-curement of Saint James Hotel and Club with Pa-nama Leaks. But, the Committee abstained taking any action in this regard.
However, after a detailed and lengthy discussion on the issue presentation of progress report about investigation on this issue committee warned FBR members against moving a privilege motion for not submitting report before the committee by Tuesday.
FBR team led by Member Inland Revenue-Policy Rehmatullah Khan Wazir seemed unwilling to in-form the Committee about updated progress report about seeking information from the Britain and Singaporean tax authorities about the mode of funds transaction.
Therefore, chairman committee asked the FBR team discuss the issue with Chairman FBR on the issue of presentation of said report otherwise committee would move privilege motion in the House against him.
Being pressed by the warning, FBR team changed stance saying that no progress had been achieved as well as it was improper to present an incomplete report before the committee. FBR officials further said that under article 21 of the treaty with Her Majesty British Tax Authority FBR could get information from Britain.
Similarly, a letter has been written to Singaporean tax authority under the same treaty for the provision of required information and response was still awaited. Singaporean side has informed that normally it takes 90 days for them to reply any such query.
