Two up­sets in QF of in­ter­na­tional squash

LA­HORE—Two ma­jor up­sets were recorded in the quar­ter fi­nals of the 4th in­ter­na­tional men’s squash cham­pi­onship when high-fly­ing Is­rar Ahmed stunned top seed Farhan Za­man and de­ter­mined Amaad Fa­reed showed exit to Tayyab As­lam to breeze into the semi fi­nals here on Thurs­day at the Pun­jab Squash Com­plex.

In the first quar­ter­fi­nal of day, Is­rar Ahmed pre­vailed over fan­cied Farhan Za­man 12/14, 11/ 13, 11/3, 11/3, 11/6 in a marathon 59-minute en­counter, emerg­ing vic­to­ri­ous with greater an­tic­i­pa­tion and zest.

Farhan started the match well and but Is­rar showed his class as both fought for each and ev­ery point. Both were tied at 12-12 and then Farhan uti­lized all his skills to win the first game 14-12. The sec­ond game was also con­tested very closely as both were once again tied at 11-11 and it was Farhan whose ex­pe­ri­enced helped him win the game 13-11.

At that stage, ev­ery­one was ex­pect­ing top seed Farhan suc­cess in the third game to reg­is­ter a sim­ple straight game win. But against all the odds, Is­rar made the spec­ta­tors and oth­ers re­al­ized why he was con­sid­ered one of the top squash play­ers of cur­rent lot.

From the third game, Is­rar started play­ing ag­gres­sive game and out­classed Farhan com­pletely and won the third game 11-3 with ut­most ease.

The same was the case in the fourth game where Is­rar out­paced Farhan with the same mar­gin of 11-3. In the fifth and de­ci­sive game, Farhan although showed some re­sis­tance yet it was Is­rar who over­whelmed Farhan with his im­pres­sive per­for­mance and won the game 116 amid ap­plause from a size­able crowd.

In the sec­ond quar­ter­fi­nal of the day, Farhan Me­hboob out­lasted Raees Khan 11/7, 11/4, 11/ 6 in 27 min­utes one sided en­counter. Farhan was ahead in all de­part­ments of the game and he thrashed his su­pe­rior op­po­nent with a va­ri­ety of shots.

The third quar­ter­fi­nal saw Waqar Me­hbob rout­ing Faraz Muham­mad 11/9, 11/6 ,3/11, 11/5 in 25 min­utes while in the fourth and last quar­ter­fi­nal, wild­card holder Amaad Fa­reed stunned Tayyab As­lam 11/7, 13/11, 9/11, 7/11, 11/8 in the 86-minute long highly well-con­tested match. In the first semi­fi­nal, Is­rar Ahmed will take on Farhan Me­hboob while Am­mad Fa­reed will face Waqar Me­hboob chal­lenge in the sec­ond semi­fi­nal on Fri­day.
