NHA’s bigger role in days to come
COMMUNICATION infrastructure undoubtedly plays a significant role
only in the socio economic development of any country but also promotes social cohesion and harmony. It is with this backdrop that the present government of PML-N as per its past traditions is particularly giving priority to build the network of motorways and expressways in the country.
This time around the canvass of the government vis-à-vis constructing road infrastructure is far bigger in nature, as it desires to connect the country not only with China under multi billion dollars CPEC project but also other regional countries including Central Asian States, Afghanistan and Iran. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif articulated this vision while inaugurating the Sukkur-Multan motorway project on Friday. In this scenario, the role of National Highway Authority, which is the leading agency for the construction of road infrastructure, assumes great importance. One of its senior officials in an interview the other day expressed the determination to expand and modernize the road network as per the vision of the PM. There is no doubt that the NHA has the expertise, experience and fully equipped to realize this dream which will not only improve the living standards of the common man but also contribute to cultural development besides helping in creating a knowledge based society. Since taking over the reins of NHA, Chairman Shahid Ashraf Tarar has in fact infused a new life and spirit in the organization with his dedicated work. Though he faced criticism from the opposition parties for what they said changing the route of China Pakistan Economic Corridor project but Tarar, who has served at very other important and senior positions, has demonstrated that he is capable to deliver on the responsibilities entrusted to his organization. The number of motorway projects launched in recent times speaks volume of the hard work being put in by him. We expect that the NHA will continue to work with the same vigour and energy in order to realize the dream of making Pakistan hub of regional trade through development of state of the art of communication network.
