Speakers call for health, safety measures part of curriculum
ISLAMABAD— Speakers on Sunday called for making safety and health measures particularly in road and building’s construction process, as a part of curriculum at school, college and University level for promoting healthy and hazardsfree society.
The seminar was arranged by Institution of Engineers Pakistan ( IEP), R a w a l p i n d i - I s l a m a b a d Center on Sunday that was addressed by eminent engineers including Dr. Attaullah Shah ( VC City University), Eng. Arjumund A. Shaikh and Eng. Shafiqur Rehman. Dr. Tariqur Rehman, who had been working as senior officer in Risk Management University Alberate, Canada was the key- note speaker who explained the safety measures during r o a d - a n d - b u i l d i n g construction’s process with the help of slides. The seminar was presided over by the Chairman IEP’s Center Hafiz M. Ehsanul Haq Qazi. The speakers emphasized that separate courses should be arranged by engineersbased institutions to teach their students about the safety and health measures that needed to be adopted at public and private level, while undertaking construction work. The IEP itself could introduce short- courses for this purpose. They also underlined the need of introducing proper legislation and standard operating procedure for carrying out construction work ensuring human safety. There was an interactive question- answer session, during which the speakers asserted that there should be proper certification of adopting safety measures before the start of Mega’s construction projects. Orientations session for engineers and workers should be pre- requisite for this purpose, as was being done in developed and developing countries.
Self- safety at every individual level and proper awareness in this connection must be promoted. There should be moral and legal obligations at the part of constructors in executing construction work, said Tariqur Rehman in his key- note address, adding “field- level hazards and proper assessment in this connection must be kept in view. There should be display of safety measures at the job- site.
Hafiz Ehsanul Qazi in his vote of thanks assured that the IEP- Rawalpindi- Islamabad Center will be made a vibrant body for the proper training of the engineers on safety measures. They will be holding regular technical lectures and courses for professional up- gradation of young engineers so that they could play productive role in socioeconomic uplift of the country.
