Speak­ers call for health, safety mea­sures part of cur­ricu­lum

ISLAMABAD— Speak­ers on Sun­day called for mak­ing safety and health mea­sures par­tic­u­larly in road and build­ing’s con­struc­tion process, as a part of cur­ricu­lum at school, col­lege and Univer­sity level for pro­mot­ing healthy and haz­ards­free so­ci­ety.

The sem­i­nar was ar­ranged by In­sti­tu­tion of Engi­neers Pak­istan ( IEP), R a w a l p i n d i - I s l a m a b a d Cen­ter on Sun­day that was ad­dressed by em­i­nent engi­neers in­clud­ing Dr. At­taullah Shah ( VC City Univer­sity), Eng. Ar­ju­mund A. Shaikh and Eng. Shafiqur Rehman. Dr. Tariqur Rehman, who had been work­ing as se­nior of­fi­cer in Risk Man­age­ment Univer­sity Al­ber­ate, Canada was the key- note speaker who ex­plained the safety mea­sures dur­ing r o a d - a n d - b u i l d i n g con­struc­tion’s process with the help of slides. The sem­i­nar was presided over by the Chair­man IEP’s Cen­ter Hafiz M. Eh­sanul Haq Qazi. The speak­ers em­pha­sized that sep­a­rate cour­ses should be ar­ranged by en­gi­neers­based in­sti­tu­tions to teach their stu­dents about the safety and health mea­sures that needed to be adopted at pub­lic and pri­vate level, while un­der­tak­ing con­struc­tion work. The IEP it­self could in­tro­duce short- cour­ses for this pur­pose. They also un­der­lined the need of in­tro­duc­ing proper leg­is­la­tion and stan­dard op­er­at­ing pro­ce­dure for car­ry­ing out con­struc­tion work en­sur­ing hu­man safety. There was an in­ter­ac­tive ques­tion- an­swer ses­sion, dur­ing which the speak­ers as­serted that there should be proper cer­ti­fi­ca­tion of adopt­ing safety mea­sures be­fore the start of Mega’s con­struc­tion projects. Ori­en­ta­tions ses­sion for engi­neers and work­ers should be pre- req­ui­site for this pur­pose, as was be­ing done in de­vel­oped and de­vel­op­ing coun­tries.

Self- safety at ev­ery in­di­vid­ual level and proper aware­ness in this con­nec­tion must be pro­moted. There should be moral and le­gal obli­ga­tions at the part of con­struc­tors in ex­e­cut­ing con­struc­tion work, said Tariqur Rehman in his key- note ad­dress, adding “field- level haz­ards and proper as­sess­ment in this con­nec­tion must be kept in view. There should be dis­play of safety mea­sures at the job- site.

Hafiz Eh­sanul Qazi in his vote of thanks as­sured that the IEP- Rawalpindi- Islamabad Cen­ter will be made a vi­brant body for the proper train­ing of the engi­neers on safety mea­sures. They will be hold­ing reg­u­lar tech­ni­cal lec­tures and cour­ses for pro­fes­sional up- gra­da­tion of young engi­neers so that they could play pro­duc­tive role in so­cioe­co­nomic up­lift of the coun­try.
