Nabi Yousaf golf memo­rial pro­fes­sional cham­pi­onship starts to­day

LA­HORE—A gal­axy of coun­try’s pro­fes­sion­als will un­der­line their tal­ent and tech­nique dur­ing the 1st Nabi Yousaf memo­rial pro­fes­sional golf cham­pi­onship which will be teed off from to­day, (Wed­nes­day) at Royal Palm Golf and Coun­try Club.

This was stated by Omer Mir, Gen­eral Man­ager, Royal Palm at a news con­fer­ence on Tues­day at Royal Palm along with Im­ran Mairaj, Vice Cap­tain of the Club, Col. Jameel Khalid, Di­rec­tor Golf and Khawaja Per­vaiz Saeed, Di­rec­tor Me­dia.

Omer Mir said that this would be the in­au­gu­ral event of the Pro­fes­sional Golf Chal­lenge Cup, an ex­clu­sive for the golf pro­fes­sion­als only which rep­re­sents a fresh and new ad­di­tion to the golf cal­en­dar of Pak­istan.

This cham­pi­onship is named af­ter Nabi Yousaf and this is a com­bi­na­tion of two icons of the well known Sheikh Fam­ily who had their ori­gins in Jhang.

One of the off springs of their ef­forts is the Glob­ally known Royal Palm Golf and Coun­try Club and the associated Royal Palm Golf Course which will host this rich golf event where pro­fes­sional golf cham­pi­ons are go­ing to il­lu­mi­nate the golf scene of the coun­try, he main­tained.

Im­ran Mairaj high­lighted that the fore- most pos­i­tive as­pects of the event and termed it a new era in the na­tional golf cre­at­ing an ideal op­por­tu­nity for the pro­fes­sion­als to hone their skills and to earn rank­ing.

Col Jameel Khalid stated that for the pro­fes­sional golf play­ers of Pak­istan, this event seeks to cre­ate a prodi­gious op­por­tu­nity and am­ple are the cash prizes for the top per­form­ers.

The prize money is ru­pees two mil­lion to be dis­trib­uted amongst forty top po­si­tion hold­ers.

He said the main cham­pi­onship for the pro­fes­sion­als will be held over four days from May 12 to 15. Each day, the par­tic­i­pat­ing will play 18 holes and over four days this will add up to a cham­pi­onship of 72 holes. The pro­fes­sional who emerges with the best gross score af­ter four rounds (72 holes) will be the win­ner of the Cup.

Col Jameel also shared that as a part of this cham­pi­onship a PRO AM event will also be held to­mor­row, Wed­nes­day. This event will be con­tested over 18 holes only. In this event the am­a­teurs will team up with a se­lected pro­fes­sional and com­pete as part­ners.

The se­lec­tion of the pro­fes­sional and his as­so­ci­a­tion with an am­a­teur will be done through a draw from the hat. Some of the prom­i­nent am­a­teurs tak­ing part in the one day PRO AM event are sin­gle hand­i­cap­pers like Ab­bas Ali Shah, Amir Mehmood, Ahmed Nawaz Ti­wana, Ahmed Rafi, Faisal Iqbal, Faisal Sayid, Fakhar Imam, Farid Ma­lik, Hus­sain Hamid, Kh Ah­san, M.Rehman, Omer Sala­mat, Taimur Shab­bir, Umair Butt and Zu­nair Aleem.

As re­gards the salient fea­tures of the Cham­pi­onship, Khawaja Per­vaiz Saeed stated that at the start of the event, a to­tal of 93 pro­fes­sional golfers will vie for hon­ors. Af­ter two rounds, a cut will be en­forced and the top 40 pro­fes­sion­als with the best scores will be el­i­gi­ble to play on the last two days of the cham­pi­onship. Khawaja Per­vaiz also ex­plained that others will stand weeded out.

Khawaja Per­vaiz Saeed high­lighted that the high pro­file pro­fes­sion­als are M.Shab­bir Iqbal, M.Mu­nir, Mat­loob Ahmed, Shahid Javed Khan, Hamza Amin, M.Tariq, Wa­heed Baloch, Anser Mehmood and Talib Hus­sain. Over the years Shab­bir Iqbal, Mu­nir and Mat­loob have looked far su­pe­rior in terms of play­ing abil­ity and con­sis­tent per­for­mances. When they com­pete, there is a mag­i­cal touch to their game and the flu­ency and ex­cel­lence in their shot mak­ing stems there­from.

It would be per­ti­nent to state here that Royal Palm Golf Course was re­cently given the award from Asia Pa­cific Golf Group of the 10 best golf cour­ses on the sub-con­ti­nent.
