Nabi Yousaf golf memorial professional championship starts today
LAHORE—A galaxy of country’s professionals will underline their talent and technique during the 1st Nabi Yousaf memorial professional golf championship which will be teed off from today, (Wednesday) at Royal Palm Golf and Country Club.
This was stated by Omer Mir, General Manager, Royal Palm at a news conference on Tuesday at Royal Palm along with Imran Mairaj, Vice Captain of the Club, Col. Jameel Khalid, Director Golf and Khawaja Pervaiz Saeed, Director Media.
Omer Mir said that this would be the inaugural event of the Professional Golf Challenge Cup, an exclusive for the golf professionals only which represents a fresh and new addition to the golf calendar of Pakistan.
This championship is named after Nabi Yousaf and this is a combination of two icons of the well known Sheikh Family who had their origins in Jhang.
One of the off springs of their efforts is the Globally known Royal Palm Golf and Country Club and the associated Royal Palm Golf Course which will host this rich golf event where professional golf champions are going to illuminate the golf scene of the country, he maintained.
Imran Mairaj highlighted that the fore- most positive aspects of the event and termed it a new era in the national golf creating an ideal opportunity for the professionals to hone their skills and to earn ranking.
Col Jameel Khalid stated that for the professional golf players of Pakistan, this event seeks to create a prodigious opportunity and ample are the cash prizes for the top performers.
The prize money is rupees two million to be distributed amongst forty top position holders.
He said the main championship for the professionals will be held over four days from May 12 to 15. Each day, the participating will play 18 holes and over four days this will add up to a championship of 72 holes. The professional who emerges with the best gross score after four rounds (72 holes) will be the winner of the Cup.
Col Jameel also shared that as a part of this championship a PRO AM event will also be held tomorrow, Wednesday. This event will be contested over 18 holes only. In this event the amateurs will team up with a selected professional and compete as partners.
The selection of the professional and his association with an amateur will be done through a draw from the hat. Some of the prominent amateurs taking part in the one day PRO AM event are single handicappers like Abbas Ali Shah, Amir Mehmood, Ahmed Nawaz Tiwana, Ahmed Rafi, Faisal Iqbal, Faisal Sayid, Fakhar Imam, Farid Malik, Hussain Hamid, Kh Ahsan, M.Rehman, Omer Salamat, Taimur Shabbir, Umair Butt and Zunair Aleem.
As regards the salient features of the Championship, Khawaja Pervaiz Saeed stated that at the start of the event, a total of 93 professional golfers will vie for honors. After two rounds, a cut will be enforced and the top 40 professionals with the best scores will be eligible to play on the last two days of the championship. Khawaja Pervaiz also explained that others will stand weeded out.
Khawaja Pervaiz Saeed highlighted that the high profile professionals are M.Shabbir Iqbal, M.Munir, Matloob Ahmed, Shahid Javed Khan, Hamza Amin, M.Tariq, Waheed Baloch, Anser Mehmood and Talib Hussain. Over the years Shabbir Iqbal, Munir and Matloob have looked far superior in terms of playing ability and consistent performances. When they compete, there is a magical touch to their game and the fluency and excellence in their shot making stems therefrom.
It would be pertinent to state here that Royal Palm Golf Course was recently given the award from Asia Pacific Golf Group of the 10 best golf courses on the sub-continent.
