District Ad­min di­rects WASA to en­sure in­spec­tion of drainage sys­tem

LA­HORE—The district ad­min­is­tra­tion has di­rected the Water & San­i­ta­tion Agency (WASA) for reg­u­lar in­spec­tion of drainage and san­i­ta­tion sys­tem and dis­posal of storm water to avoid any emergency dur­ing the cur­rent mon­soon sea­son in the city.

The in­struc­tions were given to WASA, La­hore Waste Man­age­ment Com­pany and town ad­min­is­tra­tion by WASA Vice Chair­man MPA Chaudhry Shah­baz Ah­mad and DCO La­hore Muham­mad Us­man, dur­ing a meet­ing held to review mon­soon ar­range­ments on Wed­nes­day.

WASA was as­signed the task to reg­u­larly mon­i­tor and eval­u­ate the per­for­mance of its staff to over­come the prob­lems of san­i­ta­tion, drainage and dis­posal of storm water.

A nine-mem­ber spe­cial com­mit­tee, headed by AC City, was con­sti­tuted to high­light dan­ger­ous points along the metro train route. Of­fi­cials from LDA, WASA, LWMC and district ad­min­is­tra­tion were in­cluded in the com­mit­tee.

The WASA man­age­ment will en­gage more than 3,000 work­ers for mon­soon op­er­a­tion and strict ac­tion will be ini­ti­ated against the of­fi­cials for any neg­li­gence in this re­gard.

Chaudhry Shah­baz also is­sued in­struc­tions for tak­ing mea­sures to avoid any breach in drains of the city dur­ing rains.

Mean­while, fol­low­ing the stan­dard oper­at­ing pro­ce­dures of the govern­ment, WASA will set up emergency re­lief points through­out the city at town level to drain out rain­wa­ter from low-ly­ing ar­eas.

WASA will pro­vide 44 water-suck­ing ma­chines, 250 de-wa­ter­ing pumps to its staff to cope with emer­gen­cies dur­ing rains.

The op­er­a­tion staff will en­sure pro­vi­sion of other ma­chin­ery and staff at the emergency points in­clud­ing dis­posal sta­tions, while heavy gen­er­a­tors were ready to launch an op­er­a­tion dur­ing any emergency or a power out­age.

The DCO di­rected the WASA au­thor­i­ties to de­velop close li­ai­son with the La­hore Waste Man­age­ment Com­pany (LWMC) to en­sure dis­posal of garbage and solid waste from city and around the drains.

WASA will set up more than 50 emergency points to tackle any emergency af­ter rain. These cen­tres will re­main func­tional round-the-clock till the mon­soon sea­son is over.—APP
