DUHS makes way ahead for anti-snake venom vaccine production indigenously

Pakistan Observer - - KARACHI CITY - STAFF REPORTER

KARACHI—Experts at the Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS) have claimed they have successfully tested antisnake venom vaccine which is a milestone in medical history of the country.

This was disclosed in a press briefing at the DUHS given by the DUHS Vice Chancellor Prof. Masood Hameed Khan at DMC Campus Thursday.

He introduced team of experts and foreign qualified scientists involved in the project including Dr Zameer Ahmad, Munawar Qureshi, Dr Shaukat Ali, Dr Talat Roomi, Dr Rafat Amin, Dr Sadaf Khan and Dr Tariq Ali. All the scientists gave briefing about scientific progress in Anti-Snake vaccine development at DUHS. They mentioned that lab scale development has been completed and tested on animals successfully.

Prof. Hameed informed that due to unavailability of anti-snake vaccine in far flung areas of the country many precious lives are lost annually. That is why it is important to make economical, cost effective and safe vaccines available in ample quantity.

Currently the local production is unable to meeting the country’s need. To address the local demand anti-snake venom vaccines are imported from foreign countries is not only expensive but are also less effective. Therefore it is dire need to start local production of vaccines, he added.

The DUHS VC Prof. Masood Hameed appreciated the cooperation and guidance of drug regulatory authority Pakistan (DRAP)that relevant documents are being prepared according to the DRAP requirements and quality assurance tests are being conducted to make sure development of safe and effective vaccine.

All such documents will be submitted to DRAP for getting approval for clinical trials. A team of expert physicians is available for purpose under supervisor of Prof. Muhammad Masroor. Simultaneously a state of the art commercial production facility is under construction at DUHS Ojha Campus to facilitate mass scale production of the vaccine postDRAP approval, said Prof. Hameed.

He thanked all the media personnel at the end and showed his optimism that successful completion of this project will not only save thousands of lives but will also open up avenues for the indigenous production of vaccines.
