Passerby killed in po­lio vac­ci­na­tion team at­tack

MASTUNG—A man was killed while the mem­bers of po­lio im­mu­niza­tion cam­paign nar­rowly es­caped af­ter be­ing at­tacked by un­known armed men here on Mon­day as anti po­lio cam­paign be­gan across Balochis­tan.

Po­lice said that uniden­ti­fied armed men am­bushed po­lio vac­ci­na­tion team in main bazaar of Mastung. Mem­bers of the vac­ci­na­tion team sur­vived unhurt in the at­tack while a passerby was killed af­ter be­ing hit by a bul­let.

The as­sailants man­aged to flee from the scene af­ter com­mit­ting the crime. The body was shifted to hos­pi­tal where it was handed over to heirs af­ter post­mortem.

The po­lice cor­doned of the area af­ter the at­tack and con­ducted search op­er­a­tion in the area but the at­tack­ers man­aged to flee. A case has been reg­is­tered against un­known armed men and in­ves­ti­ga­tion was in progress. Ear­lier three-day an­tipo­lio drive kicked-off in Balochis­tan prov­ince on Mon­day that aims at vac­ci­nat­ing over 2.3 mil­lion chil­dren. 6,773 teams while 825 fixed and 340 tran­sit points have been es­tab­lished for the cause. Thou­sands of po­lice and Balochis­tan Con­stab­u­lary per­son­nel have been tasked with se­cu­rity of at least 7,938 mo­bile po­lio teams.

Contin­gents of Fron­tier Con­stab­u­lary (FC) will also per­form du­ties.

Health depart­ment has made ar­range­ments in 12 mo­ha­jir camps to vac­ci­nate at least 50,000 Afghan mi­grants as well. At­tacks on po­lio teams in Balochis­tan and other parts of the coun­try have com­pli­cated vac­ci­na­tion drives for health au­thor­i­ties. In Jan­uary at least 15 per­sons were killed in a blast out­side an anti-po­lio cen­tre in Quetta
