‘Ed­u­ca­tion helps groom so­ci­ety’

Khat­tak per­foms ground­break­ing of Swat Univer­sity

PE­SHAWAR—The Chief Min­is­ter Pervez Khat­tak KP has said that with­out ed­u­ca­tion nei­ther a civ­i­lized and peace­ful so­ci­ety can be en­sured nor the dream of progress and pros­per­ity so­ci­ety can be trans­lated into re­al­ity say­ing that only knowl­edge and train­ing can curb ig­no­rance, un­em­ploy­ment and ex­trem­ism.

He was ad­dress­ing at the ground­break­ing cer­e­mony of the 1st phase of the Univer­sity of Swat at Charbag, Swat on Sun­day. Pro­vin­cial Min­is­ter Mehmood Khan, Spe­cial As­sis­tants to CM Dr. Am­jad Ali, Mush­taq Ah­mad Ghani, Ad­vi­sor, Ab­dul Haq, elected mem­bers of the Par­lia­ment, Pro­fes­sors, stu­dents and elders of the area at­tended the cer­e­mony. Dr. Haider Ali, Par­lia­men­tary Sec­re­tary and Prof. Bakht Jaean, VC of the Univer­sity also spoke on the oc­ca­sion the VC high­lighted con­tri­bu­tion of the univer­sity and fu­ture plans. It is worth to men­tion that Rs. 2.5 bil­lion will be in­curred on the con­struc­tion of the first phase of the univer­sity and it will be com­pleted in a pe­riod of one and half year. Ear­lier the Chief Min­is­ter laid the foun­da­tion stone of the Tehsil Com­plex build­ing at Ka­bal Tehsil. USAID will pro­vide Rs. 255.011 mil­lion for the con­struc­tion of the com­plex .The pro­ject will be com­pleted in one year.

The Chief Min­is­ter while ad­dress­ing the foun­da­tion stone lay­ing cer­e­mony of the Univer­sity of Swat said that the Univer­sity would be a mile­stone for the de­vel­op­ment of res­i­dents of Swat and bright fu­ture of the new gen­er­a­tions of the area. He re­marked that it would pro­vide op­por­tu­ni­ties for women to pur­sue higher ed­u­ca­tion at their door step .The CM said that peo­ple of Swat es­pe­cially and peo­ple of Shangla, Buner and Malakand Divi­sion gen­er­ally would ben­e­fit from the es­tab­lish­ment of the univer­sity He paid trib­ute to the peo­ple of Swat for fac­ing the un­favourable con­di­tions cre­ated due to ex­trem­ism and dis­as­ters in the re­cent past boldly and not los­ing courage. ‘The worst sit­u­a­tion could not lower their morale’, he re­marked.

Re­fer­ring to the steps of the pro­vin­cial govern­ment for the im­prove­ment of ed­u­ca­tion, the CM said that the ra­tio of teach­ers’ at­ten­dance had in­creased in schools due in­tro­duc­tion of mon­i­tor­ing sys­tem there. He in­formed that English has been in­tro­duced from the class one in the public schools to pro­vide op­por­tu­ni­ties to poor youth to achieve high sta­tus in the so­ci­ety. The CM ex­plained that six dif­fer­ent Uni­ver­si­ties were be­ing es­tab­lished in the prov­ince to pro­duce skilled man­power to over­come un­em­ploy­ment. The Chief Min­is­ter said tech­ni­cal cen­ters had been linked to the in­dus­tries to pro­vide skilled work­ers re­quired by the in­dus­trial sec­tor to fa­cil­i­tate em­ploy­ment op­por­tu­ni­ties in the prov­ince.

Sim­i­larly he said that Rs. 500 mil­lion un­der Chief Ed­u­ca­tion En­dow­ment Fund had been al­lo­cated to en­cour­age re­search in the prov­ince. He added that Rs 300 mil­lion had also ear­marked for ed­u­ca­tion en­dow­ment funds to pro­mote qual­ity ed­u­ca­tion. He elab­o­rated that Univer­sity Model Act had been tabled in the pro­vin­cial as­sem­bly to im­prove qual­ity of ed­u­ca­tion.

Men­tion­ing ini­tia­tives for the de­vel­op­ment of the area, the CM said, the govern­ment had planned es­tab­lish­ment of Swat ex­press­way, which he hoped would play dy­namic role in the de­vel­op­ment of the en­tire Malakand Divi­sion.

‘The pro­ject is planned to link the area to Pak­istan-China Eco­nomic Cor­ri­dor Pro­ject’, the Chief Min­is­ter as­serted. In ad­di­tion he said the govern­ment was de­sign­ing to es­tab­lish in­dus­trial park in Chak­dara to ex­ploit min­eral and agri­cul­tural po­ten­tial of the area and to cre­ate em­ploy­ment op­por­tu­nity in the divi­sion. The CM in­formed that the pro­vin­cial govern­ment had taken no­tice of the im­po­si­tion of in­come taxes in Malakand Divi­sion.

He said that pro­vin­cial gov­ern had cat­e­gor­i­cally asked the fed­eral govern­ment for its with drawl as it was in­jus­tice with peo­ple of man­made and nat­u­ral dis­as­ters hit area.

He added that the pro­vin­cial govern­ment had sug­gested to the fed­eral govern­ment duty free im­port of ve­hi­cle to curb the men­ace of the is­sue of non-cus­tom paid ve­hi­cles in Malakand divi­sion.
