19 sus­pects ar­rested over traf­fic war­dens death

KARACHI—Police have ar­rested 19 sus­pects overnight after the tar­geted killing of two traf­fic war­dens yes­ter­day. Law-en­force­ment agen­cies ar­rested nine sus­pects from Wa­ter Pump area after raid­ing an apart­ment. Eye­wit­nesses said that one of those ar­rested had long hair and an as­sault ri­fle was also re­cov­ered from his pos­ses­sion.

They also re­cov­ered a com­puter. The sus­pects have been shifted to un­known lo­ca­tion for fur­ther in­ter­ro­ga­tion. A traf­fic police spokesman said that IG Sindh AD Khawaja has sus­pended the SHO of Aye­sha Manzil police sta­tion. The spokesman said that the war­dens killed yes­ter­day were not wear­ing bul­let­proof vests on duty.

Police have re­leased the ini­tial post mortem re­port of the war­dens. One war­den was shot five times in the neck, chest and ab­domen, while another war­den has two bul­lets in his head and neck.

This is the third such in­ci­dent this year in which traf­fic war­dens have been tar­geted re­sult­ing in the death of five traf­fic police of­fi­cers.

Mean­while, fu­neral prayers for the two war­dens were of­fered at the Gar­den Head­quar­ters. It was at­tended by a large num­ber of police of­fi­cers and fam­ily mem­bers of the slain war­dens. It was also at­tended by DG Rangers Maj. Gen. Bi­lal Ak­bar, IG Sindh AD Khawaja, Ad­di­tional IG Karachi Mush­taq Ma­har and other higher of­fi­cials.

Later IG Sindh ex­pressed sor­row over the loss of lives and of­fered con­do­lences to the fam­ily mem­bers of the war­dens. He said the police will not be in­tim­i­dated by the cow­ardly acts of ter­ror­ists and will go to any ex­tent to pro­tect the lives and prop­erty of the peo­ple. He an­nounced mon­e­tary as­sis­tance for the le­gal de­pen­dents of the war­dens.
