Ko­mal to face Laiba in KP Women Squash C’ship fi­nal

PESHAWAR—Top seed Ko­mal Khan recorded two con­sec­u­tive vic­to­ries by set­ting up fi­nal clash against sec­ond seed Laiba Ijaz in the fi­nal of the 6th Khy­ber Pakhtunkhwa Women Squash Cham­pi­onship here at PAF Hashim Khan Squash Com­plex on Friday.

Former World Cham­pion Qa­mar Za­man and former World No. 2 Mo­hib Ul­lah Khan graced the oc­ca­sion as guests and wit­nessed the thrilling quar­ter-fi­nals and semi-fi­nals.

Ko­mal recorded vic­tory against Shaista in the quar­ter-fi­nals in straight sets, the score was 11-4, 11-8 and 11-6 while sim­i­larly beat third seeded Kainat Khan by 3-0, the score was 117, 11-8 and 11-9.

Shaista did not give any re­sis­tance to top seeded Ko­mal in the straight sets and lost the match while Kainat Khan gave tough re­sis­tance to Ko­mal in the semi-fi­nal. Both were stretched to three sets.

Kainat, also im­proved her game, played well against her strong ri­val Ko­mal and did some re­sis­tance but over­all Ko­mal dom­i­nated the pro­ceed­ings and played at­tack­ing game.

On the other hand, sec­ond seeded Laiba Ijaz, who also re­ceived an in­jury on her nose but she con­tin­ued and se­cured vic­to­ries in the quar­ter-fi­nal and semi-fi­nal by set­ting fi­nal show­down with Ko­mal.

In her quar­ter-fi­nal match Laiba de­feated Naima Khalid in straight sets, the score was 11-5, 11-7 and 11-5 and did the same against Maria in the semi-fi­nal. The score was 11-4, 11-3 and 11-2. Laiba Ijaz played well and did not take much time in hu­mil­i­at­ing her two ri­vals in the quar­ter-fi­nals and semi-fi­nal.

Now the fi­nal will be played be­tween top seeded Ko­mal, who is also the na­tional ju­nior cham­pion, and Laiba Ijaz, seeded sec­ond on Satur­day at 3.30 p.m at the same venue.

Ear­lier, be­fore the start of the quar­ter-fi­nals and semi-fi­nal matches the play­ers were in­tro­duced to both former World Cham­pion Qa­mar Za­man and former World No. 2 Mo­hib Ul­lah Khan. Sec­re­tary KP Squash As­so­ci­a­tion Mu­nawar Za­man, fe­male co­or­di­na­tor of squash Nar­gis Bakhash, of­fi­cials and play­ers were also present.

Top four play­ers would rep­re­sent Khy­ber Pakhtunkhwa in the fourth com­ing Na­tional Ju­nior Un­der-17 Women Squash Cham­pi­onship.—APP
