PSO sets up pae­di­atric ICU at Aga Khan Hospi­tal

AMANULLAH KHAN KARACHI—Pak­istan State Oil has do­nated a sub­stan­tial amount for a new Pe­di­atric In­ten­sive Care Unit (PICU) at the Aga Khan Univer­sity Hospi­tal The new eight-bed fa­cil­ity aims to help cure in­fants, tod­dlers and pre-teens whose health re­quires spe­cial at­ten­tion.

This do­na­tion was made by the coun­try’s lead­ing oil mar­ket­ing com­pany PSO that fa­cil­i­tates projects in the fields of ed­u­ca­tion, health and so­cial de­vel­op­ment. PSO’s do­na­tion was one of the largest among the donors. On this oc­ca­sion, PICU con­sul­tant Dr. Qalbe Ab­bas thanked the donors in their ef­forts to ad­dress the short­age of in­ten­sive care units for chil­dren in the coun­try. Dr. Qalbe, while quot­ing a re­cent UNICEF report, stated that one in ev­ery 11 chil­dren in Pak­istan dies be­fore turn­ing 5 and such fa­cil­i­ties are es­sen­tial to treat chil­dren with com­pli­cated and rare dis­eases.

Spread over an area of 5,500 square feet, the new pe­di­atric fa­cil­ity will help young pa­tients com­bat life threat­en­ing dis­eases. Ev­ery room is equipped with state-of-the-art ven­ti­la­tors and ad­vanced sy­ringe pumps to ad­min­is­ter es­sen­tial medicines. Mon­i­tor­ing sys­tems con­stantly track breath­ing, heart func­tion and elec­tri­cal ac­tiv­ity in the brain. The ad­vanced sys­tems in each room will be used by skilled pae­di­a­tri­cians sup­ported by a team of nurses – one nurse will be as­signed to each pa­tient en­sur­ing that no child is left alone. A ded­i­cated wait­ing area is present for fam­i­lies and a par­ent can be with the child in the room.

The com­pany be­lieves that chil­dren are the fu­ture of the na­tion and fa­cil­i­ties like PICU will play an es­sen­tial role in im­prov­ing child health­care.
