PSO sets up paediatric ICU at Aga Khan Hospital
AMANULLAH KHAN KARACHI—Pakistan State Oil has donated a substantial amount for a new Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at the Aga Khan University Hospital The new eight-bed facility aims to help cure infants, toddlers and pre-teens whose health requires special attention.
This donation was made by the country’s leading oil marketing company PSO that facilitates projects in the fields of education, health and social development. PSO’s donation was one of the largest among the donors. On this occasion, PICU consultant Dr. Qalbe Abbas thanked the donors in their efforts to address the shortage of intensive care units for children in the country. Dr. Qalbe, while quoting a recent UNICEF report, stated that one in every 11 children in Pakistan dies before turning 5 and such facilities are essential to treat children with complicated and rare diseases.
Spread over an area of 5,500 square feet, the new pediatric facility will help young patients combat life threatening diseases. Every room is equipped with state-of-the-art ventilators and advanced syringe pumps to administer essential medicines. Monitoring systems constantly track breathing, heart function and electrical activity in the brain. The advanced systems in each room will be used by skilled paediatricians supported by a team of nurses – one nurse will be assigned to each patient ensuring that no child is left alone. A dedicated waiting area is present for families and a parent can be with the child in the room.
