Komal beats Laiba to win KP Women Squash title
PESHAWAR—Top seed and current national junior champion Komal Khan clinched the trophy after defeating Laiba Ijaz in the final of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Women Squash Championship played here at PAF Hashim Khan Squash Complex on Saturday.
Additional Secretary Law Khyber Pakhtukhwa was the chief guest on this occasion. Former World Champion Qamar Zaman, officials and players and large numbers of spectators were also present and witnessed the final.
Komal Khan faced a little resistance at the hands of Laiba Ijaz in the final as Laiba exhibited classic strokes by enthralling the sitting spectators.
Komal played well and dominated the first set by marching into victory in the first set at 11-9. Both Laiba and Komal tied the set at 4-4, 5-5 and 9-9 before Komal took the set by 11-9.
It was the second set in which both Komal and Laiba Ijaz gave each other a tough fight. Komal got the lead by reaching at 4-0 but Laiba bounced back and first tied the set at 4-4 and then at 6-6, 7-7, 8-8 and 9-9. Komal also took the set by 11-9 and did the same in the third set, the score was 11-8. The set was also tied at 5-5, 7-7 and 8-all before Komal got the set.
It was the fourth consecutive match that Laiba Ijaz losing to Komal. Komal Khan also improved a lot and recently she won the National Junior Championship.
In her post match talk, Komal, the bronze medalist of the first Quaid-e-Azam Inter-Provincial Youth Games, said that she is enjoyed her playing while playing against Laiba Ijaz. This time the strokes of Laiba Ijaz have extraforce. “I tried hard for winning the final,” she added.
Laiba on the other hand said that she had lack of practice because she had exam but she said that Komal has improved a lot and most of the time she dominated the match.
At end, the chief guest gave away trophies and cash prize. The winners and runners were awarded Rs. 1000 as cash prizes while the semifinalist got Rs. 500 each.—APP
