Ko­mal beats Laiba to win KP Women Squash ti­tle

PE­SHAWAR—Top seed and cur­rent na­tional ju­nior cham­pion Ko­mal Khan clinched the tro­phy af­ter de­feat­ing Laiba Ijaz in the final of the Khy­ber Pakhtunkhwa Women Squash Cham­pi­onship played here at PAF Hashim Khan Squash Com­plex on Satur­day.

Ad­di­tional Sec­re­tary Law Khy­ber Pakhtukhwa was the chief guest on this oc­ca­sion. For­mer World Cham­pion Qa­mar Za­man, of­fi­cials and play­ers and large num­bers of spec­ta­tors were also present and wit­nessed the final.

Ko­mal Khan faced a lit­tle re­sis­tance at the hands of Laiba Ijaz in the final as Laiba ex­hib­ited clas­sic strokes by en­thralling the sit­ting spec­ta­tors.

Ko­mal played well and dom­i­nated the first set by march­ing into vic­tory in the first set at 11-9. Both Laiba and Ko­mal tied the set at 4-4, 5-5 and 9-9 before Ko­mal took the set by 11-9.

It was the sec­ond set in which both Ko­mal and Laiba Ijaz gave each other a tough fight. Ko­mal got the lead by reach­ing at 4-0 but Laiba bounced back and first tied the set at 4-4 and then at 6-6, 7-7, 8-8 and 9-9. Ko­mal also took the set by 11-9 and did the same in the third set, the score was 11-8. The set was also tied at 5-5, 7-7 and 8-all before Ko­mal got the set.

It was the fourth con­sec­u­tive match that Laiba Ijaz los­ing to Ko­mal. Ko­mal Khan also im­proved a lot and re­cently she won the Na­tional Ju­nior Cham­pi­onship.

In her post match talk, Ko­mal, the bronze medal­ist of the first Quaid-e-Azam In­ter-Pro­vin­cial Youth Games, said that she is en­joyed her play­ing while play­ing against Laiba Ijaz. This time the strokes of Laiba Ijaz have ex­traforce. “I tried hard for win­ning the final,” she added.

Laiba on the other hand said that she had lack of prac­tice be­cause she had exam but she said that Ko­mal has im­proved a lot and most of the time she dom­i­nated the match.

At end, the chief guest gave away tro­phies and cash prize. The win­ners and run­ners were awarded Rs. 1000 as cash prizes while the semi­fi­nal­ist got Rs. 500 each.—APP
