Re-verification of CNIC
The decision to re-verify the CNICs and Pak Passports, came after a Pakistani CNIC and a green passport were found near the wreckage of U.S. drone-hit vehicle, in which Afghan Taliban chief Mullah Akhtar Mansour was believed to have been killed a couple of days ago.
Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar on Wednesday gave a 48-hour deadline to National Database and Registration to prepare a roadmap for reverification of the entire population. The Minister was chairing a meeting at NADRA headquarters, which was also attended by the Chairman NADRA, Director General Passports and Immigration, and officials of FIA.
According to the official data of the Interior Ministry, the government cancelled 6,062 illegal CNICs issued to aliens in 2013; 22,361 in 2014; 96,689 in 2015 and 1,11,540 in 2016, while around 29,000 passports in the possession of aliens have been cancelled since 2013. The Minister issued the re-verification roadmap order after questions were raised over a Pakistani passport and CNIC found from the drone hit auto wreckage site in Balochistan, which were claimed to be held by the deceased Afghan Taliban chief Mullah Akhter Mansour.
It is being believed that the CNIC and passport were being used by the dead Taliban chief. More than 650 officials of NADRA allegedly issued these tens of thousands of CNICs to foreign nationals, majority of them were “unregistered Afghan refugees” during this period, officials assigned to investigate this scam claimed. “NADRA has 48 hours for submitting a work plan with a set deadline for initiation of National Plan for Re-verification of CNICs across Pakistan”, said the Minister.
“This measure would help us to ensure that in future no alien will be able to use Pakistani CNIC and passport, besides removal of those aliens now holding Pakistani CNIC”, the Interior Minister was quoted as saying. Federal Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar confirmed that NADRA blocked over 0.23 million suspicious National Identity Cards in past five years. I hope that the Interior Minister, who is a leader of vision, commitment and foresight, would not leave the matter at that and apart from fixing responsibility for issuance of CNICs and passports to foreigners, and directing NADRA for preparing a road-map to launch a country-wide CNIC, would devise a foolproof mechanism to avoid recurrence of the practice in future. — Karachi
