Punjab Blues, KP Colours to lock horns in U-18 hockey final
ISLAMABAD—Punjab Blues will lock horns with KPK Colours in the final of inaugural National Under 18 Hockey Championship 2016 after defeating their respective opponents in the semifinals here at Naseer Bunda International Hockey Stadium on Tuesday.
In the first semifinal hot favourites Punjab Blues defeated Punjab colours 32 in a thrilling contest.
Punjab Colours got the lead in the 32nd minute of first half when Ali Aziz scored first goal of the match. Ten minutes later, he scored another splendid goal, giving 2-0 lead to his team.
But Punjab Blues bounced back immediately when Wasim Akram netted first goal for them in the 35th minute of the match. Ali scored another goal for them in the 43rd minute to equalize the match.
Both the teams tried hard to score more goals but it was Ilyas of Punjab Blues, who finally scored a remarkable goal in the 57th minute. Punjab Colours got three plenty corners in the space of 2 minutes, but remained unable to make comeback.
In the second semifinal, KPK Colours outclassed Punjab Whites 5-1 on plenty shootouts. Punjab, who got off a flying start, with Waqas Ali scoring first goal for them in the second minute of the first quarter remained unlucky to win the match.
KPK strikers created several chances but failed to take advantage. It was Zakir, who scored a stunning reverse goal for them and leveled the match 1-1.
The match was decided on plenty shootouts. KPK managed to score four goals on five shootouts, while Punjab Whites performance was exact opposite to that as they scored just one on five shootouts. The final will be played on Wednesday at 5:00 pm.—APP
