Ter­ror­ism: De­cline in hu­man losses wit­nessed in May

The Month of May, 2016 wit­nessed de­cline in hu­man losses in mil­i­tant at­tacks in Pak­istan. Se­cu­rity sit­u­a­tion has seen fur­ther im­prove­ment as no high pro­file at­tack was re­ported dur­ing the pe­riod and no mil­i­tant ac­tiv­ity in Pun­jab­was re­ported.

An Islamabad based think tank Pak­istan In­sti­tute for Con­flict and Se­cu­rity Stud­ies PICSS ob­served in a re­port that de­cline oc­curred in mil­i­tant acts in April, as com­pared to March, 2016but in May, 2016 again a slight in­crease was seen though mil­i­tants were not able to make any high pro­file at­tack in the coun­try. Over­all 44 vi­o­lent in­ci­dents were recorded. Though the num­ber of at­tacks in­creased but the re­sul­tant num­ber of deaths de­clined.

Ac­cord­ing to sta­tis­tics re­leased by PICSS, in 44 mil­i­tant at­tacks 49 peo­ple were killed. Deaths in­clude 24 se­cu­rity forces per­son­nel, 2 raza­kars and 11 civil­ians. In these mil­i­tant ac­tiv­i­ties 11 mil­i­tants were also killed. How­ever, in these in­ci­dents 116 peo­ple were in­jured. In­jured in­cluded 42 se­cu­rity forces per­son­nel and 74 civil­ians. In May, 2016 Baluchis­tan was again cen­tre of tar­get with 15 num­ber of mil­i­tant ac­tiv­i­ties in which 19 peo­ple were killed.

These at­tacks in­cluded 2 grenade at­tacks, 7 IED’s, 2 kid­nap­pings, 3 Mil­i­tant as­saults and one in­ci­dent of tar­get killing. Fol­lowed by Baluchis­tan, in KPK, 14 num­ber of mil­i­tant ac­tiv­i­ties oc­curred which in­clude one grenade at­tack, 4 IEDs, 2 mil­i­tant as­saults, one sui­cide at­tack and six in­ci­dents of tar­get killing. Af­ter KPK, sit­u­a­tion in FATA wit­nessed slight de­cline in mil­i­tant ac­tiv­i­ties with 8 num­ber of mil­i­tant ac­tiv­i­ties in the month of May, 2016.

These in­cluded one grenade at­tack, 4 IEDs, 2 mil­i­tant as­saults and one in­ci­dent of tar­get killing. In Sindh, 7 mil­i­tant ac­tiv­i­ties in­cluded one cracker at­tack, 3 IEDs and three in­ci­dents of tar­get killing. In Pun­jab and Gil­git Baltistan no mil­i­tant ac­tiv­ity was recorded by PICSS.

In one sui­cide at­tack in KP, twelve peo­ple were se­ri­ously in­jured when a sui­cide bomber blew him­self up while tar­get­ing a po­lice van in Mar­dan. A Chi­nese engi­neer was tar­geted in Karachi an IED while a ve­hi­cle of Baloch Con­stab­u­lary was also hit by IED in Quetta Baluchis­tan. Re­li­gious Scholar Syed Khur­ram Zaki was shot dead in a sec­tar­ian at­tack by gun­men in Karachi.

In May, 2016 se­cu­rity forces car­ried out 78 ac­tions in which 47mil­i­tants were killed. Se­cu­rity forces made 178 ar­rests in these ac­tions. Se­cu­rity forces made suc­cess­ful ac­tions against mil­i­tants. A cross bor­der at­tack was coun­tered by se­cu­rity forces in which four mil­i­tants were killed in Mohmand Agency who tried to en­ter Pak­istan through Afghan bor­der with large num­ber of am­mu­ni­tion.

Six agents of NDS were also ar­rested who were paid spies and were in­volved in cre­at­ing vi­o­lence among masses through bomb blasts. Counter Ter­ror­ism De­part­ment and in­tel­li­gence agency in a joint op­er­a­tion killed six ter­ror­ist of Al- Qaeda in­clud­ing their one com­man­der.
