Box­ing event to raise funds rais­ing for Thar peo­ple

KARACHI— In­ter­na­tional Box­ing Star Amir Khan has said that box­ing matches show­cas­ing seven In­ter­na­tional Box­ers in­clud­ing his brother Ha­roon, Harry King Khan was be­ing or­ga­nized to raise funds for pro­vid­ing clean drink­ing wa­ter for peo­ple of Thar.

He was ad­dress­ing a press con­fer­ence Wed­nes­day, flanked by other in­ter­na­tional box­ers and rep­re­sen­ta­tives of or­ga­ni­za­tions spon­sor­ing the event.

Be­sides, we will also sup­port the box­ing cul­ture and en­cour­age in­ter­na­tional events in Pak­istan, he said.

The earn­ings of the events would be handed over to Amir Khan Foun­da­tion which uti­lize the funds in build­ing wa­ter wells in Thar for pro­vid­ing por­ta­ble wa­ter to Thari peo­ple, he added.

He watched the video, where he found how peo­ple in Thar were suf­fer­ing due to scarcity of clean drink­ing wa­ter and the ex­treme poverty that re­sulted in a num­ber of death toll, he claimed.

The foun­da­tion has been work­ing glob­ally to erad­i­cate poverty and fa­cil­i­tate in pro­vid­ing ba­sic ne­ces­si­ties of life to the un­der priv­i­leged.

We are set­ting up the acad­e­mies for pro­mot­ing the box­ing in the Pak­istan and first academy would be es­tab­lished in Islamabad and later in other cities in Pak­istan, he added.

“Our youth posses im­mense po­ten­tial but they lack op­por­tu­ni­ties and guid­ance in the field of sports”, Khan said.

The idea of set­ting up acad­e­mies is to bring in­ter­na­tional box­ing to Pak­istan and sup­port world class en­ter­tain­ment and ex­po­sure of box­ing in the coun­try, he added.

He also of­fered thanks to Doda Khan Bhutto Pres­i­dent of Pak­istan Box­ing Fed­er­a­tion for sup­port­ing this ini­tia­tive and Pak Army, Rangers and Po­lice for pro­vid­ing the over­all se­cu­rity and safe com­mu­ta­tion fa­cil­ity to him and his team dur­ing their stay.

Re­ply to a ques­tion, he said that peo­ple should fo­cus on ex­tend­ing sup­port as prob­lems could be re­solved es­pe­cially in the field of sports.

“Be­fore launch­ing the project of pro­vid­ing clean drink­ing wa­ter, he would him­self visit the Thar and meet the peo­ple to know ground re­al­i­ties of prob­lems there”, he said while re­ply­ing an­other ques­tion.

Funds are be­ing raised from this events through tick­ets and do­na­tions by dig­ni­taries at­tend­ing the main event es­pe­cially on June 02 ( Thurs­day) to be fol­lowed by Din­ner.

The main Fight Night will be held on June 02 at the Pearl Con­ti­nen­tal ho­tel Karachi where seven in­ter­na­tional box­ers Tasif Khan, Gal­lagher Dyle, Jody Meikle, Stu­art Mad­dox, Fracis Peter Dou­glas Croes, Ha­roon Khan and Phil Town­ley will par­tic­i­pate.

Be­sides, Live Train­ing Match is be­ing or­ga­nized at Ferere Hall where the box­ers would hold the fight with each other.

Speak­ing on the oc­ca­sion, Naveed As­ghar Chief Mar­ket­ing Of­fi­cer HBL said that his bank had al­ways sup­ported and pro­moted sports in Pak­istan.

“It is not only an in­ter­na­tional event in the coun­try but a mile­stone in the re­vival of box­ing in Pak­istan”, he said adding we would con­tinue sup­port­ing such events in fu­ture which are not only play­ing a vi­tal role in rais­ing funds for the de­prived but pro­vid­ing a sense of mo­ti­va­tion for the youth to pur­sue their dreams.

Haseeb A Gardezi Vice Pres­i­dent Op­er­a­tion Hashoo Group, Shah Khan Direc­tor Khan Box­ing Premier Con­sul­tancy UK and oth­ers also spoke on the oc­ca­sion.— APP
